I was laying in bed drooling over loads of stuff in Baker's Creek last night, and I remember seeing your beets and the red/white swirl ones....how awsome!!!

I'll tell ya this, you come on out this way, and we'll find a way to get together throughout the year....like minds ya know! We can swap seeds, animals, stories, and whatever else! *ahem, dandilion wine *

Trust me I am working on it as hard as I can. :he I just spoke with a Relater via e mail today. She is checking on the height of a barn we saw. The barn is only a couple years old. Huge metal one with a concrete floor. We are thinking about building it into a home. One of the shops in Bakersville had a beautiful wood loft. I want to copy it. I think it was the bakery. There was a spinning wheel and loom upstairs. I have pictures somewhere.

Anyways I need to figure out if the barn will support two stories or just a loft. I do have 3 growing kids and need lots of space for them. :D

This is in the herb shop. It all looked wonderful but I don't know anything about herbs yet.

Cute pictures:) I can't wait for my first beet crop to com in, I have a dark red crop in and a albino, we just planted not to long ago so they are still tiny seedlings. I'm going to try to pickle the white kind because my kids love pickled beets and I figured they would be less messy:)

Great idea. You will have to post your recipe. I am sure I will have time for another crop. My first was about 20 beets. :barnie Square foot gardening at it's best.

They grew wonderfully though. :weee

Monday 10th

It seems really quiet around the forum today.

Kinda cold here. Very overcast and windy. So I guess I will take some time to update the journal.

Mothers day weekend was spent just how I like it. Getting the honey do list done and playing in the dirt.

I had asked my dh for Mothers day to help me in the garden. I had a raised bed that had been overtaken by crab grass and I couldn't get it out. I also wanted to remove the top row of boards off of two of my boxes and use them to make another box. Does that make sense? I did not add much to the soil this year so the boxes are very low.

Well it turned out that when the boxes were built my dh inverted them. So we could not get to the screw heads. It was pointing towards the ground. I figured a saws-all would do the trick.. DH said it would chew up the lower board. And got rather frustrated with the whole thing. He insisted it would be easier to go get a couple more boards and start fresh.

Sooooo......

We chose to build a 2 x 8 foot bed that followed my white picket fence. Well there are 3 sections of 8 foot fence. So then we decided on 3 new boxes. :D

First we needed to level the ground , it was full of holes and sloping. So we brought up a few wagon loads of my compost and compacted and leveled it. But then the fence looked awful and if we built the boxes first we could not reach the bottom to paint it. So we painted it first. It was a total Tom Sayer moment, with me trying to convince my children about how great it is to paint. They fell for it.

So all in all Sat. turned out to be a long hard working day but in the end I got 3 new raised beds and a painted fence. Whoo hoo!! We then added new weed fabric around the existing beds and fresh mulch. It looks so nice. We spent Sun adding composted horse manner/ soil and peat moss.

I planted the seeds today. More green and wax beans. Peas, lettuce and a few other things. The garden sure is coming along. I guess better late than never.

We have quite a bit more fence to paint but we can do the other sections in a couple weeks.

Well other than that not much going on around here. Have a great day!!

This is the freshly painted fence and leveled ground. And yes that's my dh. He got a horrible sun burn.

This is the finished fence and boxes. I can't wait to see it full of veggies.

Gina---that is so pretty!

My little brother said to slice up beets and put them in a skillet of balsamic vinegar and let it reduce until it gets kind of syrupy and "YUMMY"

I can't wait to get my garden in and plant my first beets so I can try that!
