I thought no one cared about my ticks. Thank you for the replies. Yesterday I washed all the dog bedding and anything he has laid on in hot water. The Internet said the ticks can live through the wash but not a hot dryer. So everything got "nuked " in the dryer.

I then dusted my carpets and dog with DE. By last night the dog was rolling on the carpet scratching himself and one jumped ship. Right in front of me.

Yuck!!!:barnie

I am pretty sure he is picking up the ticks outside of our yard. We have almost no grass and the rest is veggie garden and patio. I am going to the vet today for some kind of shampoo and weight appropriate Frontline. I hope this ends our problem.

On a happy note. I just scored at a garage sale. I always search CL for canning jars. Some came up in a garage sale listing. I made arrangements to pick them up this morning. The man had 3 doz quarts, 1 1/2 doz pints and about 1 1/2 doz short wide mouth half pints. He also had 3 cast iron pans. 2 Wagner and one 10 1/2 inch unknown.

Get this. :weee I got all of it for 10 bucks. Whoo hooo!!! :weee :celebrate

Can you tell I am excited?

Oh I hate ticks!

My dog has so far brought in two!

I have 6 guinea's outside doing their thang to keep the population down.

I don't like poisons around, so I just washed my dog with tea tree and peppermint soap - I mix it together as I wash her, I use Dr. Bronners! :D

Eeeeewwwww! I'm so with you, I loathe ticks!! He probably brought home a few tiny ones in his coat. That stinks :(

Tea tree oil helps, as does the generic blue facial astringent. Sea breeze generic stuff, Equate "brand" I think.

I don't know what to do about your property though, other than to spray with an insecticide for fleas & ticks :hu

DH is prone to them and one of us checks the kids every night since they are outside so much.
I hardly ever get them and I like it that way. Of course, the mosquitoes that occasionally snack on the rest of them, eat me alive, especially my feet grrrrr

Great score!!

From the heart of Lyme Disease country I am with you. I despise those little blood suckers. I know more people and dogs who have had Lyme disease than haven't. We have been lucky in my immediate family.
Other than letting my chickens and ducks free range in the yard where the dogs are allowed I have no secrets. We check frequently.

Hey jay I was just thinking of you today. My potato basket is doing great this year. :)

I was going to stop by your journal and say hello. I didn't want to bug ya. I hope you are doing well. You and your family are still in our hearts and minds.

Have you had any time in your garden this week? Or are you getting rained on as well??

As you may have read some of us gals are trying to jump on the healthy eating band wagon. I have never been so preoccupied with which veggies go best with salad. :p My rule of thumb this week is one of each color. That's what my Grandma always did. :idunno

I have also received some kefir grains from Free. Shes going to convert us all yet. I think it's her goal in life!!

stop by any time.

Monday Monday Monday!!!

Up early this morning. Got our of bed around 3:30 made dh lunch and a breakfast burrito to go. got the coffee going and it smelled so darn good I Just had to have some. I guess that's why I stayed up.

This weekend was dedicated to my 4th graders Ca. mission project. Something most Ca. schools torture parents with. My ADD child had fought me tooth and nail for most of the last 3 weeks on completing this. The Mission building still needs a roof and to have the animals and people glued in, The report needs to be proof read and he needs to finish memorizing a 3 minute speech. All by Thursday. I think we will be fine but the key word there is we.

Most of the rest of the weekend was spent doing chores and working in the veggie garden. I am also trying to build a run area for my hens. The problem is I usually let them free range to keep my feed cost down. But with my veggies planted here there and everywhere the chickens need to be contained. I tried to put in the t post myself but the ground was way to hard and the post driver to heavy. So I recruited dh on Sun. We put in a few post and zip tied some plastic fencing on. The area is about 25 by 40. Plenty of space for the girls. But not the Roo he insisted on flying over and out a couple times. Grrr.. I guess I will need to look into netting the top. But that seems like such a pain and way more than I wanted to spend.

My dh called me on Fri with some hair brained idea about going back into business with his dad. After about an hour on the phone discussing all avenues I conceded. Then Sat. I asked him when he was going to talk to his dad, he said he wasn't. Ok so that roller coaster dip was fun.

Yesterday I was on e bay and found a Log cabin kit. Well just a shell really. But I showed dh and we started adding it up, shell, roof, windows, etc... Kinda spendy but doable. But then I started reading about the R factor in log walls and how they are not that good. Of course if you position it right on a piece of property you can factor in the thermal mass. But I think a Ca girl like me moving to a colder climate will need a really warm house.

Healthy eating around here is going good. Last night I splurged and made brown rice with dinner. That would be a big no no with low carb. Not sure how it fits in to the healthy eating plan around here.

Kefir is on the counter doing it's thing. My 4yo keeps asking, Wheres the kefir??? I told her soon!!! I splurged the other day and bought milk glass jar. The is a refundable deposit but I don't plan on taking it back. I am going to use it for my complete kefir. It will be perfect. I just need a funnel.

I think my dog broke his toe. What can yo do for a dog toe? Is it like a people toe? Not much. I took him to the vet on Fri. He got a couple shots and I bought his flea and tic medicine. The foot was not an issue then. Now he is all limpy and licking his toe. I checked it out and it is just a toe, no cut, ticks poking or burrs. Hummm, I guess I will give it a couple days.

have a great day.

The Cal Mission project...blech!

Last night we were at a local concert in the park. It is really nice, you spread out a blanket pop up a little portable coffee table, set out food, pour wine, crack a beer and sit back and visit with friends you don't see a lot.... it is a great time! Well last night I was chatting with a friend and Hubby offered her a glass of wine, she said "I can't, I have a huge English project to work on when I get home." We all looked and waited for an explanation, since I hadn't seen her in a while I guessed she was taking some classes. No, she is 'helping' her 7th grade son with an English project...or more accurately doing it for him.

 on your Hubby...they can be more impulsive than us girls ;)

Brown rice in not bad.... just go easy for weight loss. Once you lose the weight and your body adjusts to a new way of eating you can play with things like brown rice and see how much you can handle. But don't stress about it, food and eating should not be stressful!

The Canning jar Gods have smiled upon me AGAIN!!! I think this has become an obsession. It has become my goal in life to rescue all old, beautiful, useful canning jars from their untimely death in a landfill.

I answered another Craigslist add. No not the garage sale add where I bought 6 cases and 3 cast iron pans for 10 bucks, but another. I spoke with an elderly woman on Sun my original call was because she had a Daisy Butter Churn for sale. I missed that but got to talking. Yes I know that's not a surprise. Anyways she said something to the effect that she had canned. I asked if she had any jars. Whoo hoo she said sure do a ton. :weee

So yesterday I drove abut 20 min from my house with my 4yo in tow. And met this very nice elderly woman who strikingly reminded me of my mother. She was the same size and shape and was set up in her room. Big chair, all her most essential things within reach, kinda in a house bound way. She seemed happy. We got to talking. The government is taking her beautiful home. She owes more than it's worth. Typical Ca. thing. She is moving to TX to be near one of her sons.

I had brought her a dozen fresh eggs, she was thrilled. Any ways I ended up loading 6 large boxes into my van. After I got home and started unloading I found two blue jars!!! :clap There are about 8 to 9 dozen total and I only paid 10 cents each. About half pints and half quarts. With about a dozen straight tall wide mouth jars. Oh and two 2 one gallon jars.

Some are just gorgeous. I love the old jars. They all have such character and shape. I really need to get a book on collecting jars. I need to date a few of these.

Anyways so in between my laundry, dishes, grocery shopping and house chores I rescued a bit of history and met a really nice old lady. I think she enjoyed talking with my daughter and me just as much as I enjoyed her. I called my mom last night and told her about the visit and how much she reminded me of her in a good way. :love I should probably go visit my mom.
