UN document would give 'Mother Earth' same rights as humans

Oh geeze, I hate to think what I may be accused of the next time that I throw wood into the stove. This is getting freaking ridiculous!

The bid aims to have the UN recognize the Earth as a living entity that humans have sought to "dominate and exploit" to the point that the "well-being and existence of many beings" is now threatened.

In a 2008 pamphlet his entourage distributed at the UN as he attended a summit there, 10 "commandments" are set out as Bolivia's plan to "save the planet"
beginning with the need "to end capitalism."

Oh Ok, I see where this is going...

Uh huh. Same old same old. They want to eliminate capitalism so they can be the leaders of the next "great society". Because socialism has worked so well in the past and presently in other countries :gig

I didn't find it 'that bad'

it is a way to limit corporations and more from destroying the countries resources...vital to all life.

I kinda think the wording is more of a 'we need to control some possible problems NOW instead of later' and giving mother earth some space to continue is a good thought.

Also it protects the country from outside (and inside) corporations from attacking their resources. Before starting a 'big project' truly take into acct. the environmental issues...most times for the greater good of humankind we kill off species, etc. Maybe it is time to give all some consideration and room to survive?

anyone else get that from reading this? LOL

I agree with Farmer Chick. I mean, how long can we go on using resources without any regard to the consequences? I think we have a responsibilty to be stewards of the Earth, rather than raping it in the name of the almighty buck.

I don't believe in "rights". But if we are responsible, we'll care for the land and its other inhabitants as well, so that we can all live here.

But I don't believe humans are capable of wide scale personal responsibility.

Ok, so let's see this for what it is. You will now have to ask permission from Mother Earth to plant a garden, build a house, or water a lawn. Only Mother Earth can't answer you! Oh, WAIT, they provided for that... The GOVERNMENT will appoint a spokesperson for the earth! So, you will have to ask permission of the GOVERNMENT before you plant a garden, milk a cow, dig a well, or take an egg from a chicken. Let's be honest about what this is... It is not saving the earth, it is giving the government control over every aspect of your life.

Thank you very much, you echoed my feelings.

I plan on obeying all those "rules"....but I don't want the government having that much power. Which totally unbiased person and/or government will be making all these decisions? Seems like our current world leaders are doing such an EXCELLENT job of running everything else right now, should we really give them more control? I'm not pointing fingers at any country in particular, just sayin.

I didn't read through the article, just SKR8PN's commandments hehehe.

But my comments about the UN are too political to write out here. :hu
