We've had the same problem here, too dry and hot for any decent berries. Now we're getting torrential downpours every night....will the weird weather ever end?

I don't know why I never did this before, but tonight I made homemade tortillas. yummy, and went great with a little beef, onions/tomats/peppers from the garden and cheese, of course.

feel a little silly, its gotta be like bragging that you made your own salad dressing - why would anyone buy these when they are so simple and good! took more time to read the recipe than to make them.

had a jar of blackberry jam that didn't gel, and I'm contemplating braving the waters out there to see if I could make it to town to get vanilla ice cream, and then......blackberry sundae. worth putting on my boots!

old melissa etheridege cd - she's singing "don't call, some bridges burned beyond all recognition" that about sums it up !

Isn't that funny? People nowadays don't get it that it really isn't all that much work to make lots of things from scratch. Those tortillas sound yummy!

Would you mind posting in the recipes section how you made them? I'd love to try making them, maybe from the hominy corn I still have in the freezer from last winter. At least I think I still have some.....

went to a garlic festival in southern mn yesterday - prices were HIGH - up to $3 for one head of garlic. there were supposed to be 104 varieties, but I didn't see that many.

garlic ice cream is yucky!!!

It was fun, though - and lots of small garlic growers and their families there, and related vendors (food, pottery, etc) not to mention the local SFA groups, etc.

makes me wonder if I could support myself as a garlic grower.

Ran into a couple of old friends, which was great, and I got some Armenian garlic and German Hardy to add to my seed stock. I'm going to do a better job next harvest in keeping the varieties separated - things got a bit mixed up two harvests ago, so this year I wasn't sure what I was harvesting.

this year's crop was gorgeous - really big bulbs - probably from all the rain.

The heat dropped - it is 57 degrees now!!! nice relief - it'll be a fabulous day to work in the garden , keeping my fingers crossed that it isn't too muddy.

ok, they are winning.

1. went to check on the chickens still in work clothes, see a hen in trouble, go to hold her while I take care of a problem and splat! chicken droppings on my shirt.

2. into the house to find a sudden mice invasion - suffice it to say that when I went to make supper tonight, the "clean" skillet I left drying on top of the stove had calling cards in it. had to go for the bleach.

3. after supper, hear a heck of a racket outside - skunk got in under the porch even though I spent a miserable afternoon in heat and horseflies varmit proofing it - left one tiny spot unprotected so I could save a favorite wildflower, right where the skunk dug under the porch while I am on the inside, screaming like a banshee in a vain effort to scare it off. (want to hear stupid? never thought about it spraying me - it didn't)

4.after struggling with the cat to give it medicine, it promptly pukes, and then demonstrates the other side effect of the meds ( diarrhea ) on the rug

5. can't sleep because I've got the weather radio going full blast on the porch to try to annoy the skunk so it leaves

6. mice in the live trap are trying to escape, making that flip flip flip flip flip flip sound til I could, well, scream.

7. while I'm typing this, a mouse strolls across the room and the two cats? they think they are watching tv. heads turn, bodies don't move. How did I end up with two non-mousers?

all in all a pretty good life if this is the worst it gets.

gonna go have a sip of brandy and look at the moon.

Oh dear! :hugs If it makes you feel any better I pulled up my tomatoes last night. I have never pulled them before October before this year. I'll be plowing up the rest of the garden next. We are dealing with skunks under the coop. And a couple weeks ago, a mouse got it's foot in a trap and was dragging it around and when we finally got time to take care of it, all that was left was a little foot. And then the next day we caught that 3 footed mouse in the trap. I felt really bad, until I realized it must have had a death wish to get caught twice.
And :ep that is a high price for garlic!
