for dividing i use the uber technical method of dig it up and hack it with a saw or bread knife method...

i used to sit there and freek out about dividing...but honestly, as long as the plant is healthy (or dormant) and watered well before hand and not left out to dry up itll do fine! they can and will take a beating!

yup, just GO for it :D bread knife is great for smaller clumps, saw is better for BIG ones (i tend to use a saw on a huge cump to get it into 2-4 managable clumbs then breadknife if i want thos smaller...
with hostas i dont even saw i just use a flat shovel line it up and stomp as long as each clump has a deacent amount of roots theyll be fine.
oh and make sure to water well for at least 2 weeks after tansplant to help them recover :D

Ohhh my Hostas could use some real dividing... But I don't have anywhere to put them that the deer can't reach them, so I just leave them be...
I might just try this on Sunday!! I've also got a bit of soured milk I can use to water them with to help them regrow nice and strong.

Of course this also says these plants aren't even up yet at all, and we still probably have risk of frost for another month at least... Is this still ok?

you can do it now as long as you protect them, but the ideal time is july for iris, (for hosta is when you see the first growth :) )

I need to divide my hostas too. My Irises...ya can't kill them, they've been mowed, thrown into a compost pile, ran over with a travel trailer, and generally beaten half to death, and ya just can't kill them! Oh and they've been burned down once too  They are SO prolific I have to divide them every year. I took 75 to the neighbors house, and gave the mail lady about 200 a year or so ago, and they need divided again :/ Stupid things...wish I could get all my veggies to be that stubborn and hard to eradicate

I been in da mom cave!!!!!!!!! I planted some nasturtiums, some thunbergia, and some more zinnias :D So now I have 20 hanging baskets. Zinnias I planted last week are coming up :woot I'm going to plant a few Egyptian Pea Vines around the mailbox, and maybe some zinnias there as well. I have been having SO much fun with that crazy greenhouse...wish DH would have built it a long time ago ;)

I have fresh bread in the oven and made some hot sauce for the hubs :) He was like a kid in a candy store when he smelled it cooking  I think he actually squealed or squeaked or something...it was a happy noise either way :p

I didn't get to go work in the neighbors yard, it started to rain and rained for about an hour or so pretty hard and steady. It has stopped now, but I bet the flower be is slop. :/ and I was so looking forward to it :barnie Oh well...another day :hu

Hope everyone else is having a good one!!!!!! I am! :weee It's good to be well! Thank the Lord!

Good Day Miss Cindi! Sounds like there is going to be a lot of color in your neighborhood this Spring!! I've been checking out hoop greenhouse plans and getting some ideas! Seems fairly inexpensive to put together. I think the plastic film will be the most expensive part. Now go play in the mud!! :weee

Ours was $180 total, but we had free windows, screens for the door, framework(trampoline & pool) and pallets.

You got it! I will sell some too. I did prety good last year with sales! I think I made around $100 for just dividing them! I still had leftovers that I gave away though.
