agreed, a good dividing on th ones that dont bloom could see you suddenly attacked by flowers, generlaly hosta, iris, daylilly ect will all slow and even stop flower production when they need dividing. :)

So will asparagus. I was going to divide it last fall, but didn't get to it. So, that's a high priority for this spring.

I planted my asparagus not as seeds but as rootlets that I got from a local nursery. Deb, how many years, do you think, between the time that you plant asparagus rootlets and when they need dividing? Also, in your experience, can you just divide down the center of the plant base/roots? Is the process pretty problem-free?

I've never divided them B4. But, last year I hardly got anything from them. I did a google search, and found info on doing this. I think it was in Mother Earth's News. And, I'm not sure how long they've been there. I started w/roots as well.

Okay... well, I read your response and then I did a Google search. The advice I found was to divide them in late winter. That won't work so well for me, because I've got about 50 row-feet of asparagus, and my garden is covered in about 20" of snow. By the time it melts away, it will definitely be spring... not "late winter". I suppose the plants may remain dormant for a while into the spring, though.
