I use the cheapest vodka I can find, it works great!
The 'recipe' I was working off from called for a small amount of dark rum, is why I asked. I figured it was just to hurry the color, so I skipped it. I don't like keeping stuff like that around the house, unless it has other uses - vodka works well for so many different SS things, for example. I still have 1/2 pint of my original test batch - just as dark and yummy smelling as any high dollar pure extract I can buy at the store - and I only paid $6 (? I still have beans left, and vodka, so that's quick math :p ) for the whole quart of it!

Yeah the rum is to speed the coloring. I use straight vodka every time. I have used gin...it smells funny :p

I can't stand the smell of gin :sick

Back in my days as a bartender, I had to fight back gagging while pouring either gin, or any kind of whiskey - yeah, looking back, it wasn't exactly a profession perfectly suited to me

 I guess not. I hae the smell of gin myself, but it was all i had on hand making my first batch of vanilla, so uh...waste not want not. Though...notice I still have it and haven't used it all up :p

I just went down to the neighbors and picked up about 500 feet of fencing with posts to run for the beans, and about 20 tomato stakes I won't have to make myself :D I also got a bit of steel to haul off next load and helped her clean up her yard a bit in the process :woot

Tomorrow we'll be putting all that up if we don't get to it this afternoon. Also I am setting out squash and cukes tomorrow. I have about 50 of each of those. Thank God the cukes are bush type and don't need a trellis!!!! This garden and steel and produce is gonna work me to death this year  but I am grateful to have so much to do! Hopefully the Lord will bless the garden and our efforts and give us a bountiful crop and enough for these two households to put away for the year plus extra to sell. I sure hope they are ready for this, because someone will have to be picking every day for a few hours to get it all in if everything makes as much as we have planted. We'll have green beans running out our ears!

Jamie i hope you and the boy are having a WONDERFUL time today!!!

I got beans to stick....LOTS of beans! :D
Antietam was cool this morning, the restored cyclorama display at the Gettysburg Visitor Center is nothing short of spectular. Beautiful spring day, have the visitor center, the calvary battlefield, and Culp's Hill knocked off today.

This old man was walked the pup into the ground. He's napping in the hotel room, I'm trying to figure out where to go for dinner. We'll visit the rest of the battleground in the morning starting at 7 am, and will leave for home early in the afternoon (we have a YM event Saturday morning).

We MUST get to Shiloh

I did learn that the pup, as tough as he is, won't climb an observation tower - on each attempt, he only made it up one story. Poor guy!

Poor kiddo  It's funny they think they're invincible at that age, but such simple things kick their tiny hiney
