i'm looking out the window at frosted ground. no snow... we actually had some red with the sunrise today - not seen too much of that the past few months. days are getting longer...

I was told that to kill crabgrass you have to go just up under the it and turn it over onto itself. It causes it to suffocate.

Bindweed sounds awful!

Crabgrass isnt too bad, IMO. Just gotta hoe the green tips off until the roots run out of energy and die.

If only I had a way to keep it from creeping in from the edges... my garden is surrounded by crabgrass.

crabgrass is one of those opportunistic invaders. if you have a disturbed soil area of any kind it can get established and then spread out from there.

the key to getting rid of it is in not leaving bare disturbed soils that they can exploit and keeping any seedlings from growing bigger and dropping more seeds. they are much easier to remove when they are tiny, but you do have to do the work when you see them. the seeds persist for a long time in the soil seed bank so once you disturb an area they may then sprout once the weather gets warm enough.

mowing taller helps keep it from having an easy time of getting going.

i really prefer not having any lawn at all... i enjoy gardening and weeding and the lawn is the source of most of the weeds that get into the gardens. a few strategic replacements of some grassy areas and i could get rid of a large amount of my weeding problem spots (and have more room to grow more beans! )...

Front part of the property here is meadow. The grass seed infests everything. Trying to keep it hoed out is a daily chore and I'm thinking of getting an electric cultivator just to weed. I have an old mechanical one but it kills my lungs to use it so often.

I'm also spacing 4 feet on walkways this year. I have a small dog kennel I'm using as a chicken tractor to weed

Hmmm...are you saying a crate to set in walkway? That's a good idea. BUT I'm hoping I won't need that help cardboard & mulch again. Worked well where I actually put it in last one.

Not a crate. Not sturdy enough for me to feel safe. I got one of these on sale and am wrapping it with hardware cloth. It will be on 2x4 skids and I have a very little house that will fit 2-3 silkie roosters just fine. I'll put them to work.

Our temps were in the mid 70's today. Crazy! But, I took advantage and cleaned out a raised bed. Harvested a small batch of carrots - or should I say I harvested a batch of small carrots? They weren't large, but definitely big enough to snack on. I re-planted golden turnips and radishes. Only put in a small amt of each and I'll come back and plant more in about 10 days or so.

I've got more broccoli that's ready to cut. What was I thinking when I planted so much? I prefer broccoli fresh, but I may freeze or maybe dehydrate some for soup.
