SO just got a crossbow. He also likes that it is quiet. He got one he can restring himself, that will save us money in the future, because we won't have to take this bow to the "bow guy" to be restrung.

We have been shelling beans and stripping corn from the cob. The beans are for our food and seed for next year. The corn is for popping and chickenfood. We'll save a few of the smaller cobs for rabbit treats.

SO sorted through the garlic, we will be planting the biggest in the next few days. The rest will have to last us till next harvest. I occasionally get new garlic to add to our existing stock.
So far we have italian red(received from SO's grandfather many, many years ago, polish red, german white and another italian. They are all mixed up now and the only one we can rally tell apart, is the german white. They are all nice and spicy though and are fairly easy to peal. I like having different varieties because I believe that the diversity is better for the plants and will provide us with a better product. And if one kind doesn't like that years growing conditions, the others will probably be ok or even thrive. That way we are never at a total loss.

I think we save money by growing our own chickens... this year I will be raising my own meat chickens from eggs.. the breeders are old enough now...

Last year from the chicks we grew 10 lb chicken roasters that we made 3 meals for 5 people from 1 chicken!

Dinner #1

1) roast chicken

Dinner #2

2) chicken soup/stew

Dinner #3

3) chicken and dumplings

With 50 to 100 roasters... this will feed my family for a while

after our huge score from our farm market friend (i'm still floating on air!) we are headed back today to pick the last of his apples. if they are still good the house is going to smell like applesauce for days. and if they are frozen or icky they'll be fun chicken and turkey treats all winter!

whoot!

also make turkey mole last with the leftovers from our $5 grocery turkey! and dont forget the turkey hash....

:p We got lucky today!
We don't hunt ourselves (city folk in the county) my hubby went to the Chiropractor, got to talking and was offered a deer!

I think it will be cleaned and boned, we might have to take it to a processor, but free is free! :D

Saved on food, kinda. Cleaned my large upright freezer and my refrigerator freezer and made a list of what was on each shelf and how much. Found steak taco meat I forgot I had and lots of other tidbits. Then sat down and made a list of all the dishes I could make buying as little add ins as possible. Lots of new old meals to make.

Got real lucky yesterday, was talking to a gentleman that owns around 200 acers of ground behind where I live, and he was looking for someone to help clean it up by cutting down the dead trees and cleaning up the downed ones. So far I have over a cord of wood, and it is all hardwood, maple, beach, birch and still lots more there yet. All it cost me is the gas to cut it up, the bike to go get it, and the sweat needed to do the work. Will save around $150.00 per cord....gotta love being in the right spot at the right time....
