We bought 8 chicks on sale a couple days ago and snagged up a bag of pine shavings. These shavings are so much better than what I have gotten in the past - those were more like sawdust.
I remembered reading on here somewhere that you could use the shavings for cat litter. Wahoo, $5 (40# bale) vs $27 for a 20# bag of Feline pine.

I had already bought a few seed potatoes. A friend just gave me a flat of sprouted potatoes from last year's crop. More spuds for nothing. Cheap is good, but free is better!

I caution you about using shavings as cat litter.....they will be dragged far and wide throughout your house......more so if you have fluffy cats! You might try the pelleted horse bedding which is more like the Feline Pine pellets, or even alfalfa pellets, which are fairly deodorizing and the same size and texture. Both available at TSC or feed stores.

Oh great...and I have a box filled with shavings already. I used to get the horse bedding that was like Feline Pine, but everyone around here switched to a different kind that really smells icky just coming out of the bag. I didn't try the alfalfa pellets. My daughter hated them when she tried them, but I'm not sure what she bought, maybe rabbit chow?

Guess I'll grab the broom and head upstairs where the boxes are. Oh joy.

Edited: There was only a couple pieces on the floor, so not bad at all. But it's only been one day, too! :)

Try the straight alfalfa pellets....if you don't have critters to eat them if they don't work out, you can use them as fertilizer in your garden, especially for green leafy things.

Planted seedlings. I had all the seeds on hand from last year, as well as leftover Jiffy pellets from a prior year's purchase. I did bring in potting soil from my container garden for a few things, as I was short pellets.

I will also make some banana bread with sale purchased bananas bought for this purpose. I am going to freeze it for an upcoming unavoidable crazy week with a household member having surgery. This will be cheaper than snacks from the hospital cafeteria!

Posted on my FB page asking friends to save some items they would otherwise throw in the landfill. We'll see if anyone does. I can reuse them in my garden.

We are hunkering down today. It is raining and we have had a rough week. I decided to make some crackers, that I can eat, from scratch. They turned out very nice and we are having them with some canned sardines.
This will be a good base recipe for me. I love crackers, but I since I have to stay away from refined carbohydrates, sugars and other refined foodstuff, I rarely get to eat any.

One step closer to producing all our own chickens here....picked up three FREE gigantic roosters today, about a year old. Two Buff Orpingtons and one mystery barnyard mix, but all gentle and huge. I have five roosters now that are completely unrelated to my hens and for the price I spent last year on chicks (more than half became hawk food) we will have as many chicks as we can get from the incubator. In theory.

A pair of redtails killed my best broody hen this week. I'm so glad I have a Plan B in progress. I'd been hoping to get the newly hatched chicks under her so I wouldn't have to raise them, but, well, we are still more independent now, and hopefully one or all of her three daughters will be a good broody.
