TOTALLY AGREE!! There are a lot of ways to avoid making tactless comments that wound others or just irritate them. You can:
1) remain quiet
2) change the subject
3) agree with someone to avoid an argument
4) move away or "have to run, now!"

NOBODY wants to hear about your unsolicited personal preferences or is interested in your unsolicited education, either.
Thumper was right: "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

I wish I knew who said this quote, but I don't know who to give credit to. It is something we tell my son from time to time.

It is better to remain silent and to be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I love that quote too... I have no idea who said it originally... I did a google search and the answers ranged from Abraham Lincoln to Groucho Marx, George Eliot and Lisa Simpson :)

I'm pretty sure that the quote is Shakespearean.

I can't think of anything really rude being said directly about me.

But, this is one thing that sticks in my mind about someone else:

My Aunt is 90 years old. About three years ago, my sister and her family (daughter, husband, and she is overweight) came for Christmas Dinner. My Aunt made the comment to me (she is hard of hearing, so very loudly) "Those people from Meigs County (where sister lives) are as fat as pigs!"

I don't think they have spoke to her since.

(I'm quoting you..hee hee)

:yuckyuck

I also get the "are those real" question...usually at parties when everyone is "feeling good". Anyone else get the follow up question, "can I feel them?" :p yup ALL the TIME!!! What gives? (Usually it's women too!!)

Anyhoo, I really don't see that as too rude, but DONT ask me if I'm preggos!! I got that once years ago (during a fluffy period of my life) and I have never forgotten it.

Good grief!! I cannot believe how insanely rude some people can be, Delia!! Alright, I guess I'm now glad for a less noticeable chest :)

I remembered one, but it was not directed really at me. We're in the process of foster care. SIL, with a bit of a scowl, announced that she couldn't understand why ANYbody would want to do THAT. Same SIL, upon hearing my sister was adopting a second child, stated that SHE just could never love somebody else's kid.

Glad she's not adopting or fostering. :idunno

"Are those your real boobs?" Exactly that way, is what I get alot.....and I dont even answer as I can not believe they even ask that...
To all you ladies that have been asked that question about your boobies...... I think we need photographic proof of the aforementioned body parts. That way we can decide for our self if they are yours or not.
:frow :D :D :D
Uh, Skr8pn, maybe you're trying to qualify for the rudest comment? ;) By the way, you attributed the quote wrongly to me. I have most definitely never been asked that question.
Sorry about the misquote. I quoted a previous post with double quotes in it, and just trimmed out the excess. Looks like I trimmed in the wrong direction. :gig

That would be a rude request not a rude comment... and yes, it was meant to be sarcasm. :gig

I have had many rude things said to me, but I cannot think of one right now.
But I do remember being very rude to a fat girl in High School.
I went to a large inner city all girls High School for my 10th grade. There was one exceptionally large girl in the school, who I encountered frequently. I used to make snide comments within earshot and block her path on the stairs along with other students.

I have been thin nearly all my life without trying too hard. I was raised to believe that when a person is fat, it is their own fault and it is a "fault".

Well, by the time I went off to college I realized that all that was very wrong. Having fat friends, I learned how painfull all that rude behavior is. I also learned that "fat" is not a choice. There are many different reasons why a person might be fat and unless someone is a friend, it is none of my business.

I wish I could apologize to the girl I was rude to in high school.
