I think I know what I am going to name the new brown quail hens
:gig

The big tough looking one will have to be Zoe :D

There is a little runt that is a bit spazzy that is definitely River :gig

Just need to decide who looks like a Kaylee and who looks like an Inara!

Yeah, it's kind of weird how nobody seems to be buying right now. I am thinking of advertising the ducks in the Denver craigslist. Now with the new rule change allowing poultry and goats, that might be the place to get things sold quick.

Which craigslist town are you listing them in? Did you include pictures?

Denver CL. One picture of the baby goats, none of the chickens. I've had people e-mail about the chicks then I include pix of them. Reposting ad today with pix on the ad. Have 7 chicks, two of which need to go together, and 2 goat babies left (3 but 1 is spoken for).

I am relisting the ducks today too. Hopefully we can both get our excess critters sold.

I owe a woman here in the Springs a drake and I have to buy a batch of ducklings to pay off my "debt". I also need a drake from a different bloodline for next year. That darn Tweak fathered so many babies in the last 2 years it is hard to find Welsh Harlequins not related him. What a stud eh? :p

So I released 3 of the "baby" quail in to the colony pen today. Zoe, Inara and River have joined Romeo, Keiko, Lucy Lu, and Wednesday. I swear I heard Keiko chirp "THANK GOD!" once she realized I was adding more females to the group. Between Romeo and the recently sold Dwayne, that poor girl is bald. With only one male and other girls to help with the wifely duties, she may actually grow some feathers before the snow flies. If not, I guess I will have to knit her a quail saddle and a little cap :gig

Of the other 3 babies, I am pretty sure one is a male. There is also one really LOUD female in there. I have named them Monty and Yolanda. These are the two I am planning on selling. The other bird...well, not quite sure if I have a Kaylee or a Simon yet. As soon as I know for sure I will either have someone to keep the other girls company or a snack :D

We have BABIES! Lexi's clutch hatched sometime last night. I knew something was up when she didn't come out of her duck house for her morning peas. I checked on her this afternoon when I got back from the farmer's market and saw some little faces peeking out from under her. I will head out there in a bit and try to snap some pictures.

A little sad news...I had to tell a local farm to cull one of their duck hens. She came from a clutch I hatched last year. She had gotten her foot wrapped in twine somehow and by the time they got it off her leg had been damaged. Her leg was swollen and not function, plus there were other issues.

Apparently they have a scaly leg mite problem in that pen. I haven't seen it up close before, but I have read enough BYC posts to recognize the signs. I told them everything I remembered about treating for it. I will also send them links so they can take care of the chickens I saw there with messed up feet.

So long Betty Lou. Bert will be lost without you.

To make sure I don't accidentally contaminate my birds, I sprayed my shoes with neem oil and then I will put them in the wash. The clothes are going in the wash and I am hitting the shower before I go anywhere near my birds.

I am usually pretty lax about biosecurity because of all the wild birds that fly in the pen, eat my duck's food, etc... but this is a direct threat and I don't want to have to deal with mites. EWWW!!!

Sorry about their duck.
Congrats on the duckling! Babies are great. Especially when you don't have to do midnight feedings or nasty diapers.
Thanks for the reminder about Neem oil. It's good stuff. One warning- don't use it on kitties for flea control. Bad for their livers. I would still use it for other stuff, but just not on a cat.
