:gig I love that show!!!

I am always proud when I catch sarcasm. I like telling people when they do it wrong. You are supposed to exactly invert the tone, or use dead pan. Some people do neither and expect it to be sarcasm when it obviously isn't because they didn't express it right.

I learned sarcasm from a college roomate who rarely used anything else. It was painful!
So here are a few incidents from childhood that make me go hmmm...
1. 2nd grade report card comment: "Kristin needs to come out of her shell." My parents and I just chalked that one up to my shyness. Recently I read the Kitchen Daughter, told from the perspective of an adult woman with undiagnosed Asperger's. Her parents received an identical comment at a parent conference. You have to realize that my shyness was extreme. I hate talking to anyone I didn't know.
2. Prior to that, 1st grade, my sweet young teacher whom I adored had us all sitting on a carpet and was showing us words on cards. She held up "paper" and no one knew what it said. I knew. I knew for sure. And yet I couldn't raise my hand to say. And I still remember 41 years later.
3. I was 8 or 9, walking around the neighborhood one summer day. There was a dog wandering around that I was following. It looked similar to our dog who was a mutt, but much bigger and darker. Two neighbor ladies were standing in one's yard talking. They called to me that I should catch our dog and bring it home. I was incapable of telling them it wasn't our dog. And yet I continued to follow that dog until it disappeared into the woods. It took me years to realize they must have thought something was wrong with me!
4. I had just a basic lack of knowledge how to interact with other kids. It took me forever to make friends. When I did they usually let me know that I was weird all the time...

Then there were my weird little obsessions. Like I would go into a store with office supplies or school supplies and just stare at them. I have a student like that now. He loves looking through our catalogs. In second grade he asked Santa for an office desk and supplies. He got it. His favorite gift that year was a tub of multicolored binder clips. My supervisor made this face behind his back like "Hoo boy what a nut!" while I was thinking to myself, "I am so envious!!" I totally get it!! She didn't at all...
I still have an aversion to new situations. I don't like answering the phone if I don't know who it is.
We've always just assumed I was really shy. Now I wonder if there was more to it than that.
Oh! Here's a weird one. I was fascinated by the storage closet in my elelmentary school. If you were among the trusted you might be given the key to retrieve something your teacher needed. It was the highlight of my 4th grade year to be among the lucky ones. I loved that room. I loved the smell of it especially. New boxes of crayons, construction paper, aaaaaaaaaaaah! First time I went past one of the storage rooms at a school I worked in I about fainted from the memory of it!
