That's what marriage is. Legal prostitution. You sign a contract that says I will stick around for this much cash. Which I'll do if I find the right proposition, but I won't ever see marriage as anything BUT a contract.

It is a great institution, if you like institutions.

I agree about the contract. Did it once, never again. I don't want someone to have to stay just because the piece of paper says you have to. Just a way for the government to get a piece of the action.

RIGHT!! It isn't a tax advantage either, unless one or t'other is a stay at home. The govvie knows this. It's why they impose common law on folk so they can get more money from a couple choosing to not marry!

Um.....marriage was around for centuries before taxes.....not saying it isn't taxed now, just sayin'......

The other side of the coin is that marriage is a protection for all involved. But only if you choose a good mate. Many women (men, too, but mostly women, it seems) choose a jerk and then complain about it. Worse, they blame each successive mate for the sins of the previous mate. "I won't marry you because my first was a jerk so I don't trust marriage" simply means you chose poorly yet again.

But I have a good husband. My second. First was a poor choice, made when I was a teenager and ignored all the obvious signs.

*laughing* I'd partner long term with someone I got along with.

Whether or not we married would depend on finances, how much taxes we'd save, etc.

I know marriage was around first. But now it's mostly tied in to money. Before it was tied in to marking a child for inheritance. :D

Abi, even when one spouse stays at home, you get taxed.
And with the marriage tax thing changing now, its going to hurt us big time.

One thing that is happening in very conservative circles, and something that I have mixed thoughts on, is nixing the state license, and just having a church wedding with a signed and witnessed certificate.
I "think" they are then getting it notarized...

State mandated licenseing to get married is recent in history, and it has everything to do with ig government.
Half of me wants to nullify the state license we got, but at the same time, I know the circles we are in would not support it if they knew.
We do not view marriage as a man made institute :hide

And the system we are caught in would make it very difficult for us to have just a church certificate :hit
