Nope....don't care what people spend their money on! But I do care about all the drivel and syrup about FiFi and Little Red Hen, all the countless dollars spent on their baby poo-poo....all that spoken evidence of this big hearted person who would even spend thousands just to save a chicken.....who will then turn hard hearted in a second on a fellow forum member and slash them to bits with their tongue and not even turn a hair when they do so! Where's all that big-hearted syrupy lovey-dovey compassion then? Let's make someone feel small and excluded every chance we get.... but Heaven help us if we let a chicken die without sending it to John Hopkins Medical Center for a gizzard transplant!

THAT'S what I am uncomfortable with and find all that animal- based compassion a bit hard to swallow.
Ah, ok, I think I understand where you're coming from now, thanks for clarifying.

Can I just meekly point out, though, that what y'all are saying here (not just you and not just this thread) is kind of slashing THOSE people to bits with your tongues and making THEM feel small and excluded?

(And by "them" I mean, in part, me -- I certainly don't think anyone has an obligation to go into debt for their animals, and please remember Beekissed that I was among those who thought it perfectly reasonable for you to want to see if you could repair your cat's leg yourself... but I don't see anything wrong with a person spending a buncha money on a chicken if they want to, and in general I do think that animals deserve many (not all) of the same rights and respect that we give to our fellow humans, and I will not stay silent if I read something that suggests an animal is being treated really cruelly or neglectfully)

All I'm saying is, please don't do the same thing to me (and to others here) that you feel is being done to y'all, huh?

There is a wide diversity of viewpoints and beliefs represented on this board, not just a club of everyone-alike... it kind of creeps me out when the discussion starts to ASSUME that only some viewpoints are welcome.

If you will notice, I don't feel the need to venture an opinion, or thought, about your feelings about animals deserving everything that humans do....that is your opinion.
Sorry Beekissed, that's exactly my problem -- you (and I'm not singling you out - a bunch of people, on this and other threads) HAVE ventured opinions about the feelings I have about animals-deserving-etc-etc. And very explicitly too.

But it is certainly not your opinion that "creeps me out" -- if you read what I wrote, you will see that what bothers me is the way a number of people are all chiming in with the same mudslinging as if nobody else is around.

Like imagine if a bunch of atheists started a thread bashing Christians, speaking as if there could not possibly be any Christians within earshot and their folly and selfish idiocy was self-evident to all, you know? Substitute "people who believe animals have rights" and there ya go.

Just getting a little weary of having to be scared of where I step all the time...there's toes everywhere
Yes, in fact there ARE toes everywhere. Or anyhow noses that we all need to be aware of when swinging opinions around. (vaguely a la the John Wayne quote) It's a big world and one can't assume everyone is going to belong to the "us" group when gathering around insulting "them".

I'll stop now; I'm not trying to CAUSE trouble, I am actually trying to REDUCE it by arguing for more tolerance and moderation of language,

Bringing discussions down to the point of always worrying about offending does nothing but stifle the free exchange of ideas. Can we all please accept differences, listen patiently to complaints and accept that not everyone agrees with everyone else? The comments were addressed to no one in particular and should not be shouldered by one person as a personal insult to them, or the group they decided they represented.
