Everywhere I go lately there are goats or goat "stuff". My little mom and pop feedstore is on facebook and they posted a link for "fun goat facts" (some of them silly, some pretty cool) and a coupon for goat feed.
Then a friend on FB posted about her neighbor's goats getting out and eating the front hedge - she thought it was hilarious.
And THEN the guy that lives just a hop and a skip away from me (has goats) and he has about 4 little skip popping kids on the ground!
I am on the sly doing some rearranging in the barn and some goat-proofing in Buddy's paddock. There will be dairy goats here. There just has to be
On another note, I started my tomato seeds and I have a few teeny little plants breaking the soil! And my garden peas are trying to sprout... I wasn't sure if it is too cold so I put a very thin, light layer of straw over them just in case. (probably kill them my luck ).
Buddy broke into the feed stall AGAIN!! This time he had to knock down a 4x4 and then ducked / scraped under the 2x6 I nailed up several days ago. Fortunately I was pretty much out of feed, so he didn't get much at all. He was standing there looking out the slats of the stall door waiting for me when I went out. Dork.
**&*(@# dog got Big Poppy!!! I have clipped everybody's right wing and he still made it over the privacy fence. He is still alive.... can stand, fuss but not hold his head up. Not one single tail feather left, lots of feathers missing off upper back /lower neck.
Gave him a few drops of sugar water - all he would take. Left him on a towel in my bathtub with sugar water and scrambled egg. Don't have ACV (never could find the right kind)
running late to work, so not much I can do now... IF he makes it through the night I will be impressed.
while I fixed my lunch / got dressed in record time I left the light off..... after about 10 minutes maybe, I went back to brush my teeth and he had moved. I picked him up to give him more water and he struggled and fussed. I set him down and he was standing and holding his head up a tiny little bit (before it was laying on the ground even when he was standing)... not quite high enough to be straight out from his body. I gave him more water and a tiny piece of scrambled egg... fluffed his towel and left him to fight for himself. I'll take an early lunch and go back in a couple of hours.
If he is still alive, is there more I can do? Maybe some yogurt or something?
I forgot I had a training class at work so I only just got to run home and check on Poppy - he is still alive. He drank some sugar water on his own while I held it for him, and when I set scrambled egg in his beak he took it down. He fussed at me when I picked him up.
His head still flops. He seems to be able to pick it up a little, so I am hoping it is just muscle / pain etc and that some rest will help him. I didn't 'want' a rooster originally, but it has paid off with him watching over the hens... and he is not friendly as far as wanted to be petted, but he is sweet and doesn't puff up at anybody - adults, kids (yes, supervised) or dogs.
So here's fingers crossed and a whispered prayer for the Poppy chicken. It is rainy and getting cold (Florida style ) and so I will keep him in tonight. If he makes it through I may set him up in a wire kennel in the morning and give him a good thick bed of straw so he will be off the wet ground but can't see his girls.
Sometimes chckens can make amazing recoveries. I hope Poppy will be one of those. Sounds promising since he is eating/drinking and his neck is improving.
