She is the sweetest cow I've ever met and has become very spoiled in the two weeks she has been here. She has come to expect her groomings and when I stop she keeps rubbing her head against me and the brush until I start again! What a little baby doll she is! Funny to watch her and my younger dog, Jake, vie for my attention. They almost came to blows this evening with her trying to butt him out away from my side and he snarled at her.....had to correct him for that~big time! Jealousy is an ugly master, kids!
I mixed 4 eggs in her feed tonight for the extra protein and she gobbled them right up. Should be good for her coat and for her overall conditioning.
She has slowed down a little on her grazing and I'm wondering if its the heat~85 degrees today~ or if calving is imminent. She has almost full shade in this particular paddock, so I am doubting its too hot for her. Also, there is a steady breeze wafting through that orchard most of the time. She has fresh water twice a day and plenty of it.
The chickens are dispersing every cow patty, so we don't have too many places to dodge when we walk around the yard and orchard! Also....no fly larvae or chance of worm larvae having a chance to incubate and hatch. The chickens follow her around like a snack dispenser designed just for them!
And then the dogs follow the chickens around for their special snacks.
And when I milk, the chickens will probably get some skim milk at times and produce eggs that I will feed back to the cow in her sweet feed when I want to give her a special ration.
The symbiosis of it all is a wonderment to me!
Planted flowers today, which always makes me especially happy! Will plant more tomorrow evening and on Monday. Perennials and annuals, herbs and flowers.
Today we went to a redneck wedding~real redneck and kinda sweet~ate free food at the reception and then went swimming in a cold mountain stream. Back home to get warm and dry.....heavenly bliss!
Tomorrow its church and then on to tour a rich guy's farm and fish in his trout pond~HUGE trout~and get some composted horse manure from his caretaker.
Monday I am getting most of my upper garden planted, compost covered and tucked in with grass clippings. Then maybe a campfire in the yard and good family time, with card games to follow.
Everyone needs to eat bacon! YUM. Makes me hungry just talking about it. We have some from the 1/2 pig I just bought ... hope to fix some of it on Monday.
Today I mowed the grass in the yard (short work - little yard), bought some groceries (out of potatoes and I got a WATERMELON ), ran a million errands, and fixed some bbq chicken and pork steaks on the grill AND went to work.
While I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off we had a teenage boy hired to dig a drainage ditch for a French drain in front of our garage. Until today a hard rain would cause a flood of water down the drive and into the detached garage which is slightly down hill from the driveway. The garage would flood and then when the water would subside there was always a layer of mud left behind.
The "kid" got the ditch dug out about 3 feet deep all across the front of the garage and with a ditch and "catch basin" leading away from the garage out into the yard. His work was excellent! He worked hard for 7 hours digging through gravel and then layer of brick.
We put the soil/rock into my truck (which is now overloaded and will probably have to have some of the load removed before I can drive it -- tomorrow). That soil is going to a friend's pasture that has a creek that tends to flood her for adding to her levee.
We are going to fill the ditch with black drain pipe angled to facilitate drainage into the catch basin and big gravel. Hopefully the problem will be solved.
Tomorrow AM unload truck (maybe reload part of it and unload it again) -- GO to work.
Monday (if it is open) get gravel for ditch (maybe two loads!) Kid to refill ditch and lay drain pipe. This will be moved to Tues evening if gravel store is closed for Memorial. In which event I will work on the chicken coop and garden instead of ditch and gravel.
Sounds like an awful lot of industry going on there, FF! Maybe you thought this holiday weekend was Labor Day?
I like the recycling of your dirt!
I am up at 4am for a totally nasty reason......I reached over to take a drink out of my glass of water and I almost ingested a spider!!! Spit water everywhere, turned on the light, shuddered in horror and quickly killed the spider. Now I can't sleep. Can't imagine why.
I am up and at em, as well this morning. Your spider tale started me with a good chuckle.
I have decided (while I "slept") that the most efficient way to take a little weight off of my overloaded truck is to pitch out all of the rock, brick, and stone that I can. This will take a little weight off and I can use the rock in the bottom of my "catch basin".
I am hoping to get this unload job done as early as possible this morning, while it is still cool. That way I can have some "feet up" time before going to work today.
I am working for a really nice kid today. He has big Memorial Day fun plans and never gets a Sunday off. It is really hard on me to work a full day at the cash register with my arthritis, however so I need to conserve my feet and legs as much as possible.
Isn't it typical that standing at a cash register hurts me three times as much as shoveling dirt!
When I am "Homesteading" I can work at my pace, sit when needed (or lay down) and shift positions. At work I am stuck and usually hopping around like crazy!
Hope you can get back to bed and get some rest this weekend!
