So do the mini's eat less??? I heard that mini cattle eat less, you know, because they take up less space...turns out, that's not so true (honest!) and by the time I put out the expense to buy a mini, might as well go for the standard!

So, do you know about the feed conversion?

Hey, do Wooly's have udders? Can you milk them?

What about those tusks, do they shed them? and if they do, are they ivory?

I think there might be a market, too, for Wooly Tail Hairs...maybe it's possible to harvest those hairs and they could be braided into rope like horse hair?
Tail hair from the wooly mammoth makes a fine fiddle bow. Read that in Mother Earth News lately.

Backyard Poultry had an article that the wool from the wooly mamoth makes superior nest box material. Something about it's texture makes the hens lay more eggs and also prevents them from eating them. Some have reported almost double the amount of eggs being layed.
You might try selling that at BYC.

I read that thread! When I went out to do some 'bonding' with him yesterday I tried to groom him to get a feel for his fur and how much he was going to shed. He was actually quite patient, I think he liked the attention :) I ended up with quite a large wad of his hair, so I put it in the nesting boxes this morning....the girls are pretty interested in sitting in those boxes today!
We'll see if I end up with more eggs!

Thank you! :D

Boy Dace, when you said "wad of hair" I have to admit I almost lost my breakfast, but now that I think of it, would you mind selling a wad for my hens? Is that how you measure it by the wad? (Lets see how many times I can say wad!:p)

Hey, Dace, I'd like 2 wads please. My hens are going through a fall molt. A couple look like they've been plucked.

I thought as well as putting some in the nest boxes, I would knit them a sweater.

WAD

I don't like the word WAD at all unless it is used ONLY in this manner---a WAD of MONEY for Karen. Then it is OK.

I hate the word PUS also. Just makes my skin shiver---BOO

Wooly Woody could be champion stock. Are you going to "show" him. You could do very well on that.....with the breeding rights paying out top dollar.

Is he ridable? Maybe to move fence posts with his trunk. All animals must be dual purpose on the farm.

You know, I need to knit a sweater for Susie, my frizzled hen. Could I get a wad of Woody wool also please.

Here is a pic of Susie earlier this year. You can see why she needs a sweater for the winter.

Maybe I could felt her a little jacket instead of knitting. I don't like to knit. Does anyone have direction for felting a chicken jacket?
