At last you finally did get some vegies out of your garden. Hope there'll be plenty more for you.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal with your lamb, we all do stupid stuff now and then
I tend to beat myself up plenty when I do, no need for anyone else to do it ;)
Especially when one of my animals gets the short end of it!

Hopefully things will do a complete turnaround for you. Bountifull garden and everything going smoothly as far as your critters are concerned (including the fence!) :hugs

Thank you, Denise! I don't think my garden will be exactly bountiful but the corn may just make it and the pumpkins and squash also...if the rain keeps coming.

I really, really like coming home and seeing the peaceful menagerie outside my window and how all the animals come running when I go out the back door.

I think its more than a food bringer thingy, as the cats come to the backyard also and they all gather round me if I sit down....dogs, cats, sheep and chickens. I feel like Noah and it sort of feels good to know they want my companionship as much as I want theirs.

When I get out of my truck in the evenings, the sheep stick their head through the fence and Baaaaaa! at me...like saying, "Welcome home, Mom!"

Never gets old to me...... :D

I love the greeting I get from the critters also. I can go out not feeling so great, but it never lasts long when you get mobbed by the dog, the chickens and the goats and sometimes even the cat  Lately , even the neighbors chickens come running :p

It has always made me wonder...and I'm not a mushy, lovey animal person by any means....about the connection between man and animals. Even though they have their own kind with which to bond, they seem to love being around the human. Go figure!

What do they see in us, besides a food source? Why do they look upon us as the alpha, the leader, the big roo? Did God just build this into domestic animals and we have slowly bred out the traits that may have produced animals that weren't as dependent? Did we cull the non-friendly ones over the many years? Would they feel the same way if we were not their primary food source(though this doesn't apply to my sheep as they can eat grass anywhere)?

Sounds like your fence has a bad ground. I would double check that and maybe put in a deeper ground rod. Dry weather effects the ground rod a lot. It needs to penetrate damp soil.

Glad to here the lamb is better. His momma is a Katahdin correct?

And "junior" at 3 weeks and after his horrible mutilation.... :p

Farm, I thought the same thing about the ground rod but its the same after all the rains have dampened the ground. I may try a double ground and change out my insulators and see if this helps. I really need that electric for separating the flock.

Look how fat and slick and taking care of business!

Our pal Malcolm is really growing. He has developed a fascination for my turkeys! It has gotten him in trouble twice now - sticking his head through the electric net and getting STUCK!

Both times the pony yelled for help and my D1 was out there pronto, but the last time he had gotten his scrapie ear tag hung up and ended up pulling it out!

He loves my new coop and keeps laying under the nest box to cud so he can listen to the hens inside (he seems amazed), watch the turkeys, and generally lean on the coop in the shade. I need to get some new pictures. Maybe tomorrow.

Farm, you really need to post an updated pic of cute Malcolm! He is the prettiest marked sheep I've ever seen.

You know? This little ram is also very curious about the chickens and tried to butt a broody I threw out of the coop this evening... She was all puffed up and he tried to butt her...and then thought better of it.

Curious things, these sheep. I've never seen a bigger bunch of busybodies in my life! Always have their noses where it doesn't belong.

I took the tags off my sheep when they got here and didn't put one in Moonshine's ear at all. He is destined for the table, I'm thinking. The other girls will stay right here unless I get rid of Ugly Betty...and she still has her ear hole if I need to tag her again.

They aren't real strict on scrapie tags here unless you are selling one at the livestock auctions.

Will you retag him?

She is just keeping it for reference.

I think part of his fascination with the turkeys involves "Soccer Ball". That is the name given to a little Ameraucana roo that is out there with them.

Originally the turkeys and my replacement pullets all lived together. Then I moved the turkeys to the new coop at D1's so they could graze and I put my old 3 year hens out with them to fatten a bit before I cull them. No problems with that at all.

Then I determined that of the chicks I bought I had two cockerels, a splash Polish and Soccer Ball. I advertised on Craigslist and sold a trio of the Polish including the little roo, so now I had pullets and SB.
Then SB decided to start crowing and we can't have that around these parts! So to the meat pen he went.

First day back and everyone chased him something terrible. My D1 finally intervened when she watched the turkey jake walk up to him and mule kick (to the front) poor Soccer Ball clear across the pen!

D1 took him INSIDE to live in a dog cage in her computer room. He just went back out with the meaties last week. Doing better these days but then again he has discovered that he can run and hide UNDER one of the hens, my Maran. It is really funny cause he is almost as big as she is! All of that drama and the two jakes are having display wars to see who is top man.

Malcolm loves to watch the show.
