You'll laugh at this...and that's ok, I did too, until I tried it. But my dog will pee on command. I dont' mean he won't pee until I give the command, but I guess it reminds him what he is outside for?
Anyway, everytime he went outside I'd say, during the process "Go pee... good go pee!!" and treat when he was done. Now when I take him to the feedstore with me we go around the side and I tell him "go pee" to be sure we avoid any temptations from other dogs who may hike their leg inside.

Of course - he figured out also that in cold rainy weather when he just wanted to come back inside he would lift his leg and do nothing.

They go potty after: eating and drinking, playing, or sleeping, watch them at all times they are out in your house, when they start seeking a place to go, take them to the door ask them in a real excited voice do you want to go out!? then open the door and let them go when they are peeing praise ,and treats. Then take them back to the door so they know that they were only out there for the purpose of bathroom, go in and ask them to sit and get another treat. Make going to the potty a big fun time. Since you have twins just make them both go thru the routine at the same time.

The bell on the door knob is what I use, and it does work but it takes time, I have not started Carly with the bell yet.

Be patient and be consistant. If you see them peeing on the floor don't scold just grab them and run them out the door so they can finish outside then more praise.

Limit access to non-carpeted areas in the house because carpet feels like grass to them and you will have more accidents. No throw rugs either.

I use generic listerine to clean up the accidents, it takes out all the odor.

Carly has had only one poop accident since she has been here, and she is down to only one pee accident a day or so. The bonus is she can already sit on command and she brings me her leash when she wants to go out because I have been leash training her at the same time. She went for six hours last night in the crate and still made it to the door :celebrate

If they do make an "error" on the carpet after you clean it up apply lots of fine grind pepper liberally to the spot. The next time they try to sniff out a good spot they get a nose full of pepper!

Also be careful what you clean with. Cleaners with an ammonia base smell like urine to animals. I use Clorox Clean up ... then again you have to be very careful with that because it contains bleach. I have old wood floors and it doesn't bother them.
Would that work w/cats, too? I caught Rerun peeing outside of the litter box today. :somad

That is often a sign of cystitis....discomfort with peeing is associated with the box so they go outside. But some cats don't like their litter brand changed and will resist a new kind.....tough for sale shoppers....and some cats need a sparkling clean litter box each time, so scoopable has to be changed often, too. We have a cat who was almost put down a few years ago for this very reason (he ruined a lot of boxes....suitcases full of clothes, and boxes being unpacked when we moved, anything that is delivered and not unpacked quickly, the box of kindling near the stove....all were fresh litter boxes to him) and a more holistic vet told us all this. We made the changes, changed his diet, and he hasn't missed the box in about eight years. So I try to spread the word just in case this is your cat's situation.

Maybe that's her problem. I've been noticing that she hasn't been acting quite the same lately. Guess I need to take her to the vet.

That is one smart pup! My two are sitting for me now also but I'm still having trouble with "come" on a consistent basis. When they are distracted or playing, they ignore the command.

Is it my imagination, or are the girl dogs a little smarter about potty training, just like little girls are? My boys took forever to potty train but little girls seem to learn more quickly...is it the same with dogs?

Dewley will just let fly anywhere, whereas Tuesday will go in the back bathroom on a throw rug. Still not ideal but at least hers is easy to clean...no carpeting involved.

I think my problem is that my dogs aren't inside all the time and I am at work all day. This makes potty training opportunities a little sketchy. I only have them inside for about an hour each evening, whenever I can. This may be lessened as winter gets colder...they cannot tolerate the wood stove much and my kitchen floor is too cold for me to stay in there with them all the time.

I hope I can get this to work as I would love for them to be able to come inside for visits but seriously do not want to have a house that smells of dog pee and poop.

Bee, I am sure you will work it out, they sound like very smart little buggers and it may just take longer because there are TWO of them heehehe!

Tanks, I broke the people food habit by letting everyone know that Teddy seemed to get an upset stomach and has been throwing up every time he gets people food. Which was not completely true, but the threat of having to clean up dog vomit really dampened the temptation to feed the dog xtra treats. Now when MIL wants to give the dog a cracker or some nonsense Hubby pipes in and tells her it will make the dog barf ;)

That' funny Dace. It's not really him eating meat and stuff it's the location. I will admit my dog eats a ton of meat and gravy type things with his kibble. But I usually put it in his bowl at meal time.

Bee, Tobias was the worst for potty training. I don't know if you guys remember but when we got thim for the first 3 months we had no outside space for him.. He used the house all the time, even when I took him out at regular intervals. But now he knows to go to the door when he needs to go out. Actually, I hate to admit we have a lever handle door and the big oaf can jump up and open it himself.

Anyways, with as much as your little ones are outside they will learn that is the place to go. It's just gonna take a bit of time.

Well it is more feeding the dog for the fun of feeding the dog that was killing me. My hubby would insist that cooked bones were ok, so I had to pitch a fit over that one, then the kids wanted to share their popcorn or whatever with him then MIL always wanted to feed him snacks and treats. I just wanted to control what he ate. So I lied :hide

He did used to randomly barf, so I guess maybe it could have been true.
