Now...maybe you all could help me with a training issue for dogs?

I have absolutely no experience with house training puppies! Never really had puppies this young and never had them in the house much.....how in the world do you keep them from peeing and pooping everywhere if you do not have a crate thingy?

I want them to come in for visits and cuddle time but I have no idea how to teach them to go in a specific area, like a puppy pad.

Help me???? :barnie

ha! my theory is that if ** I ** have to pee - then the puppy does also
;-)

so i just take her out every time i have to go hee hee hee... of if she is snuffing around or whining. after a while she figured out that if she whines a little i'll pick her up, take her out, give her "good dog!" when she pees and then back in we go. the whining doesnt work if she just wants attention - she figured that one out too.

but i wouldnt do a puppy pad thing - i think its too confusing. pee? dont pee? too much for a puppy to handle. also i have my dogs confined to a 'dog area' in the kitchen so if they pee in their den.. well. there you have it.

just keep taking them out and give a big cheer when they pee outside.

:)

It really helps to have a crate or small confined area. They don't want to mess their bed! Depending on your puppies age you might be getting a lot of exercise. Whenever he wakes up grab him and take them out. Whenever he starts sniffing around grab him and take him out. If he sneaks away grab him and take him out. You will get really good at being suspicious of what he is doing. Spray any spots where accidents occurred with vinegar. When he potties outside give him praise or a small treat. Sometimes older dogs will help teach younger dogs where to go.

Well...you see...they only come IN for an hour at a time. During that hour, I would love to not have too many accidents. The little girl pup has chosen my back bathroom as her "accident" place, which suits me just fine...but I don't know how to show the pups that I would prefer NO accidents inside.

Dewley? He lets fly wherever he is at the time and too quick to intervene!

For now, I've been using my "bad DOG" voice when it happens and placing the pups back outside. I don't know how effective that is but they seem to understand they've done something bad....I just don't know if they understand it was the poop/pee that was the bad thing. :hu

Plus...these pups are way more sensitive than Jake was to the "bad dog voice" and will sulk and hide afterwards while giving me hurt and sad looks. I don't want to confuse them nor break their little sensitive spirits but I do want to enjoy them coming in now and again.

In that case I would probably keep them in a box unless you are cuddling with them. It worked really well with my pups. I know what you mean about some dogs being really sensitive and you don't want to break their spirit.

One extra thing a lot of people do is to train the pups a signal to you when they need to go out.

You hang a bell from the door knob at nose level. Every time you take the pup out to potty you ring the bell and then open the door and take them out. With smart dogs it takes very little time before they learn to ring the bell when they need out. ;)

That is a great idea! I can DO that. :D

As for a box? It would have to be a refrigerator box! These pups are large and vigorous! Plus, I want them to be on the floor with me, snuggling and learning who I am.

They got real big, real quick!!! :th

I bought a medium sized harness the other day and I can't get it over Dewley's head!

If they do make an "error" on the carpet after you clean it up apply lots of fine grind pepper liberally to the spot. The next time they try to sniff out a good spot they get a nose full of pepper!

Also be careful what you clean with. Cleaners with an ammonia base smell like urine to animals. I use Clorox Clean up ... then again you have to be very careful with that because it contains bleach. I have old wood floors and it doesn't bother them.

I usually use Lysol Tub and Tile on those spots...lemon scented!

Great idea for the black pepper! I will definitely be using that one too, Farm!

:thumbsup

They are getting into their terrible two's.... Nothing is safe!
