I own a big travel trailer with slideouts. We hit the road as often as we can with beach destinations most important but love to do smaller weekend trips in the mountains and lake areas.

Want some help from the Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Alabama and Georgia members. These 5 states I can drive to very easy.

So---if you know of any wonderul campgrounds that fit the big travel trailers tell me.

Word of mouth and recommendations on where to camp is the best way to find wonderful vacation adventures.....so all you campers jump in and tell me some wonderful places to camp.

I don't know who truly camps on this forum, lol, cause I don't see it mentioned much, but hey, I am throwing this post out there and see if I get any great recommendations.

:)

a nice rv park but not sure how big of a trailer you can bring

Get Away to Short Stay located on a 60,300-acre lake in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, is the perfect spot for a weekend getaway or vacation.

Jutting out on Lake Moultrie, Short Stay is ideally situated next to Francis Marion National Forest, ensuring the tranquillity and privacy of the recreation area will remain for years to come.

The area is teeming with hiking, hunting, fishing, water sport, and golfing opportunities. Nature sightings are common, as alligators, deer, raccoons, rabbits, seagulls, hawks and other wildlife call Short Stay home.

Just minutes away are historical sights such as Strawberry Chapel built in 1725, Mepkin Abbey where monks have resided since 1942, and Old Santee Canal Park with nature trails, picnic areas and an interpretive center.

Hikers and families will enjoy the Lake Moultrie Passage of the Palmetto Trail whose gateway is located near Short Stay. The 425-mile non-motorized Palmetto Trail traverses South Carolina from the state's sliver of Blue Ridge Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean.

Historic Charleston and the coastal islands are less than an hours drive from Short Stay. Visitors can take guided tours of Charlestons historic district and tour some of the finest plantations and homes in the South. Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island, Folly Beach and Kiawah Island offer public beach access.

The Information, Ticket and Travel (ITT) Office is located on the Weapons Station and we offer discount tickets to local attractions and historic sights, said Annette Sellers, ITT manager. We have driving maps and other useful brochures. The base is a 30-minute drive from Short Stay and downtown Charleston is an additional 20 minutes or so from here.

Guests dont have to travel far to partake in fun activities. Short Stay offers a beach and swimming area, a boat ramp, and a large playground for children. The nearest town, Moncks Corner, has local and chain restaurants, gift shops, grocery stores and discount supermarkets.

Contact Short Stay toll free at 800-447-2178 or visit their web site at www.shortstay.nwchs.navy.mil. For discount tickets to Charleston attractions, contact the ITT Office at 843-761-7601.

uh, do you camp? Do you camp with a travel trailer like I do?

I searched this and you have to be a military member to stay. I am not in the military, lol, even tho the military campgrounds are some of the best.

No, I don't want off the internet, close to your home type campgrounds, I want actual experienced campers staying at these campgrounds...but thanks.

There is a few on the Natchez Trace nature trail that are nice. Are you travelling with kids? If so, I highly recommend the KOA in West Memphis, Arkansas, and a trip to the Memphis zoo while there. LOTS of stuff to do in Memphis, just watch where you're going while there and don't go too deep into the bad neighborhoods on the South and West side of town. That KOA has a dog park, nice pool, and pedal trikes that the kiddos loved, close access to a bunch of decent eateries, and a WalMart with convenient access. The others we have camped at have been in desolate areas where hubbys jobs were located. that's the only really good one I know of that I have personally been to. I know there are some up around Dollywood in East TN, and one around Gatlinburg that my cousin has took her RV and said it was really nice. I'll see if she remembers the name and the city where she stayed at that one.

thanks for reminding me about the Dollywood area. I haven't been to Gatlinburg in over 15 years. Cool. About 4 yrs ago I checked into Dollywood for small kid rides and they have a whole "mini" amusement park for little kids. Perfect for Nicole and I forgot all about that.
Wonderful area for me to hit in spring. I will start researching soon.
thanks for the reminder! :)

I was thinking of one we went to years ago, but it's in Maryland. I was thinking it was in Virginia. :(

I don't know how it is now, haven't been there since I was a kid, but in Virginia, there's Tom's Cove Campground on Chincoteague Island. If you have a child that is crazy about the Misty books, it's a great place to take them. It's just a short trip to Assateague Island where the wild ponies are.

Deb

I went there about 25 years ago and had a wonderful time nice area and I did see the ponies

I just never thought of returning but now I am going to put it on my travel plan. Hadn't thought about that island in a very very long time and yes I know it would be a great trip for Nicole.

I will hit search on Toms Cove Campground and get reviews etc and see if it is still open. Thanks! :)
