New arrival today. He's a Brangus steer, Black Brahma / Black Angus cross. I hope for a late September or early October 2024 processing date, he should be huge by then. He's right at 425 lbs. The guys loading chute was a mud hole, it's been wet here. But he hoped up in the trailer just after he scratched and itch on his face on the bottom rail and got all muddy.

I wanted to call him Porterhouse, but my wife wants to call him Brisket, so his name is Brisket.

Here's a internet picture of a mature prized Brangus bull. Brangus bulls grow pretty tall and weigh around 1800 ~ 2000 lbs when fully grown. They are good foragers and thrive on not so lush pasture.

Little Brisket has a long way to go. but I plan on giving him a good life and plenty of time to get there.

I want to believe I'm done with cattle for a while now. But only Almighty knows for sure. I really wanted sheep, but I got cattle. Maybe if I really want goats, I'll get sheep 🤔

Jesus is Lord and Christ 🙏❤️🇺🇸

Lots of coffee today! Kids are headed back to school, woke up to 2 inches of snow :(.

Laid railroad ties at the property yesterday as we were having a hill wash down onto the driveway. My back is protesting today but it felt so good to get some work done.

any way to work on the uphill area to stop, spread and soak in the water that is flowing? otherwise it looks like you'll have the dirt coming over the tops of those ties the next time you get significant rains. learning how to follow contours and berm an area can be a fun thing to do. terms to search for are swales, a-frames, contour and if you want to get into it even more there is keyline. all good topics. :) have more fun! haha... ;)

2 tall, that might have to be the outcome, we have rain forecasted for this week so we will see if it runs over or funnels down the side. I hope it runs downhill but we are prepared to add more. We have enough for the opposite side, but can add to what we just laid and grab more later for the other side.

@CrealCritter , nice looking steer, seems real quiet. You will not want to wait for fall of 2024 if you want T-bones... have to kill before 27 (?) months to be eligible and they will determine that by the teeth and growth... Cannot get the backbones or anything connected to the spinal column due to the mad cow disease...after that. I like to get rib eyes and NY strips and get the backbones for soup and dog bones and stuff... Besides he will be too big by then. You want him to finish out in the 1200 lb range and he should hit that before 2. If he weighs 425 now, then he ought to weigh 8 by the end of this years grass as what we call a long yearling... he ought to be well at the 1200+ lbs or more, by the end of grass in 2024. Too big and some places can't handle the size either for hanging.... I think you will be surprised at the growth of a breed that is more suited to "beef" than the belteds.....or dexters or crosses. But the cuts of meat are bigger too... It is in the finishing where you will see the difference of the flavor and texture of the meat.
