O. M. F. G.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We scored soooooooooooooooo big at the u pick today. We came away with beets both red and golden, and peppers of several colors and acorn squash and cabbage both green and purple and sweet corn and peas and leeks and onions both white and yellow and a purple one and potatoes both yukon gold and a red and big round fat eggplants and turnips and carrots. All for $30. I'm thinking of going back either tomorrow afternoon or wednesday morning to get more potatoes and tomatoes and more beets and probably more carrots :D and we didn't grab our sugar pumpkins today so i need to make sure we do that and other squashes :D
I had an awesome time digging with my hands for the potatoes and educating people on how to find them, and SO had fun digging the leeks and telling people how to make potato leek soup :D

I love my life today!

3 fist-sized potatoes
3 leeks
1 stalk celery
1 large carrot
1/4th cup (1/2 stick) of real butter. don't use margarine. i will disown any and all knowledge of your existence.
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup water
3 cups milk or nondairy liquid
Snippets of thyme, marjoram and basil

Peal and cube the potatoes, clean and chop the leeks, chop the clery, and peel and dice the carrot. Place the prepared vegetables and the butter in a saucepan. Add the salt and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, unti butter is melted and the vegetables are coated.
Add the water and bring to a boil, then cover and simmer. Cook until the potatoes are tender, adding more water if needed.
Remove vegetables and puree witht he milk in a food processor or blender. Return to saucepan and add herbs. Reheat but do not boil.
Makes 6 1/2 cups, 6 servings.
note: if green stalks of the leeks are used, the soup will be green; if only the white part, the soup will be cramy white. It's good either way.

:)

We got this recipe from the Gluten-free Gourmet book :) very good mmmmm

I usually use rich chicken broth as the base for my Leek and Potato Soup, other than that our recipes are almost identical. :drool

Ok, so the last few days have been a blast. Really, just a blast :th and so I feel the need to share.

In the last couple weeks I've made peach jam and raspberry jam and strawberry jam and even a batch of strawberry peach jam with just a hint of frozen raspberries (because not enough leftover strawberries). I made pickled beets last night.

'zilla and abi came for the ducks Sunday (right, it was sunday?). I tried doing a chicken by myself tuesday morning. Wednesday I took 18 birds to the meat lockers instead. Thats going to be almost 80 bucks out of my pocket

Last year in august we adopted two cats. SO picked one out and I picked out the other. My cat is a torty named Diego, and his is a black named Minerva (I'm aware diego is traditionally a male name, but she came with that name so :p and also minerva was named after the Harry Potter character, and yes, my SO gave that name to the wrong cat  ) Every 6 weeks or so (i've complained about this in the past) Minerva will go into what can only be described as heat. Every. 6. Weeks. For a bloody week she sings her song and throws herself down in front of every male she can find, regardless of species. So, since we are not taking the cats with us when we move next month and instead are giving them to a friend who will give them a lovely home, I took her to the Humane Society yesterday where she was adopted from. She originally came off the streets of Casper, Wyoming and from there to a shelter in Casper. Then Casper transfered her to the Humane Society in Boulder, CO. She was barely a year old when SO adopted her from there last year. The vet took her back, shaved her underside, and came back and said "This cat has never been spayed. There's no scar, no tattoo, nothing. We adopted out a cat to you, against our regulations and State law, unspayed." So, they provided, for free, the wellness exam, the surgery, and the pain meds. I just had to pay for her yearly shots. How do you let a cat out without checking to make sure its been fixed?!!? I realize mistakes happen, but why didn't someone shave this cat in the first couple days she was there, notice there was not scar or tattoo and go "we need to spay this cat" ?!!? And, according to their digital records, my cat was never spayed either!! And, I just examined her, and I can't feel a scar? So, I don't know if she was either! How do you let two cats be adopted on the same day and neither of them is fixed? my only consolation right now is Diego has never shown any signs of being in heat, so unless she is the most dysfunctional nonspayed cat in the universe she's been fixed.

I can't wait to move, but suddenly I feel very disorganized and I'm not sure why. I'll be glad when the 25th gets here and I can focus just on the moving stuff.

Yeh. Not sure how well the ducks would have gone without two of us. So I can understand just taking the chickens in.
