the yarrow should grow just fine where you're at. I'll send ya some of mine, if you want? I dug mine up from my sis's place. She looked at me like I had 2 heads when I got so excited and asked her for a few pieces. "Dawn, it's just a weed, take all of it that you want!"...Oh sis, it's soooo much more than that!

Swagbucks' Froobie deals killed me yesterday...they had a pair of Vivitar video recording binoculars for $40.00 (usually $100.00+), short paycheck after doc's week off so couldn't get them. Been wanting a video camera for years!!!


We did a nice, relaxing visit at mom's yesterday. Brought home more "weeds"...golden ragwort, wild clematis, some wild onion looking plants and something that looks like small iris leaves but may be blue-eyed grass.

Today made up for yesterday's relaxation, though. Today I paid tuition!

I was so proud to get the temporary fence up around the orchard and paid for that proud moment when I went to burn more stumps. I got to walk twice the distance, instead of just straight to the stumps. Yay! On the upside, I got 6 more stumps burned and think I have only one section left to burn before I can start planting.

I feel like I'm soo far behind, garden/planting-wise because it's been so unseasonably hot and then remember it's still March and not June. Come back Spring, come back!

Well, I had a pretty long list of things to get done today, but after yesterdays' long hike from burning close stumps, I feel like I've been hit by a Mack truck so I'll be piddling today. :/




The mail lady just dropped off a box of plants (Raspberries and Irises) so I'll get them unpacked, soak the berry roots for a bit and get them potted up and tuck the Irises in over on Iris hill, which is expanding nicely. Will mess with my seedlings, haul in some downed wood for tomorrows stump burning excursion and who knows what else.




I pulled up the "hallway/kitchen" carpet yesterday so that Bubba and Smoke could enjoy the cool floor on their bellies. They seemed pretty happy that they've got me trained so well.




We'd looked at the Iris bed on Tuesday and saw no sign of bloom stalks...found several yesterday!






And if anyones weather gets too wonky, it's probably my fault...I wore shorts to mom's on Wednesday. I never wear shorts in March!!!

Today is being spent working on yesterdays' To-Do list. I'm not breaking any speed records as we hit 90 today.

I can't get over just how green it is here already.

Just got in from spending a couple hours of bushwhacking my way to the sang patch and I've got a bunch of seedlings sprouting right now! Comparison pix of the area before and today. Glad I got a meandering pathway cut today or else I'd probably not be able to find the area again.

I did get turned around (direction-wise) when I headed back to camp but I'm glad I did...does anyone know what this large bush is? Close-up of the bark.

Wanna get dizzy with me? Stood in one spot and took pix while I did a 360...

I believe your bush is a Southern black haw ( Viburnum rufidulum) member of the Honeysuckle family. I looked it up in missouri wildflowers book. Picture from the book and your picture looks like a match.
Description: shrub or small tree to 20 ft tall but usually much shorter.
Flowers: large, terminal clusters of 3- or 4- rayed cymes to 5" across,individually tint white, 5-globed, only 1/4" wide.
Leaves: thick, leathery, shiny on upper surface,lighter with rust-colored hair underneath, elliptical ovate, to 3" long; teeth on leaf margins small and crowded. Leaves turn red in fall
Fruit: a blue-black drupe ( a stone-fruit surrounded by soft matter, as in a plum)
Habitat: dry woods,rich valleys, streamsides

I'm not familiar w/that bush, but I checked out Viburnum rufidulum, and agree w/Bambi. The flowers, leaves and bark all look like it.

It's definately a Southern Black Haw and you can use the berries/fruit to make wine.

Finished yesterdays' list except for hauling indoor water and stump burning.

Got the second soft-side shed door chicken proofed and will finish messing with that wire project tomorrow while I finish burning out stumps in the orchard. This project is really gonna miff the cluckers as I'm working it so that they have one way in and one way out from the coop door to the yard. I can already hear them cussing me! It's really all doc's fault because I told him I felt like I was walking through a cattle chute to get to the coop and he said it might be easier to "herd" the chickens that way.

Got a lot of downded wood hauled in for that project so all I have to do is start the fire tomorrow.

Watered all of my seedlings and I'm fairly certain that what ever got into the pepper mini gh got the seeds.

I'm whooped, in a good way!

If you got that excited- you must have known what it is good for. It's also supposed to be good for companion planting. I'd like to try growing a little bit.

Good job on the fencing. You might want to make a gate somewhere. I guess it depends on how often you would need to go through that area.

I'm behind on my planting too. But I got some kiwis the other day! One of our friends has acreage and told us that we could plant some stuff there if we needed to. So we are going to "share the kiwis". We paid for them- they will plant them and water them and we'll share the crop.

Someday- when we have our own place for them, we will get starts off them to grow on our land. We are thinking about doing some raspberries and grapes together too.

There are actually two "gates"...one runs the lenth (west side) of this downed tree (so we can roll up the wire whenever doc gets around to getting it cut up) and the other is on the east side. Once we make this fence permanent, we'll have a real gated located on the south side, right off of the driveway.

In hindsight, I should have waited to put it up after I was done stump burning. All I have to do is snip a few zip ties and I can roll the fence up...don't know why I didn't think of that the other day!

Not sure if I'm going to burn today since it's a bit windy. May just do some more excavation around the rest of the stumps and blackberries once it cools off. Decided to remove the b-berries since I want to put my raspberries in this area and don't want the wild berries passing anything nasty along, just in case.

Gonna head up to the shed and get some seeds sown.
