This morning was the day for the monthly bird walk. I thought about not going since it had rained last night, and there was still the chance for some rain. And, I wasn't expecting a good turn out. But, I went anyway. I figured if nothing else, we'd just sit in the nature center, watch the rain and see what birds came to the deck. Much to my surprise, there were several people there! And, it wasn't raining, so we went for our walk. We had a good walk. I wanted to take a pic of a blue bird in the top of a tree, but couldn't zoom in enough on it. Saw some ducks we don't normally see (buffle heads), as well as a brown creeper. I couldn't tell you when the last time was that I saw either. I had a new pair of binoculars that I wanted to try out. I got them in Harbor Freight for a whole $7.00 or so and wasn't sure how they'd do. (They're a pair of mini's, I have them on the waist band to my hip pouch.) They worked great! I might get another pair of them as a spare, maybe leave them in my horn bag.
After the walk, I had nature club. I've been getting really discouraged. It seems like I just can't get the club built up. I have people come 1x, seem to like it, but that's it. And today, we were having something special. Well, I had 3 kids that were "normal" kids, then had 3 new ones. We started by making bird calls. The kids really enjoyed that. Then, we had our pledges, and went into the lesson. We've been learning about birds this year. There's a guy that goes on the bird walks that has a touch pad w/a bird app on it. He's played some of the bird songs on it B4 while out on walks, and actually had the birds come flocking to him! So, I asked if he could come this month so the kids could hear what some of the more common birds sounded like. He went above and beyond what I was expecting! The kids loved it! The parents loved it, and so did I! He brought in a 32 inch screen TV so they could really see the birds, played some of the songs, and gave a little quiz thru out to see how well the could identify the birds. Then, they heard a story from one of the volunteers. Again, the kids really enjoyed it. I'm hoping that they'll be back next month and that the club will finally start to grow.
