Hey Deb,

Good to hear you got the horses all taken care of. Isnt it just crazy how much time just the regular chores take every single day? I always have a hard time explaining it to hubby. He thinks I can get everything done in an hour and them I am fresh and relaxed to tackle more projects. It is usually more like 3hrs and I am pooped. Sounds like you overworked yourself at one point and your body is still trying to catch up. Maybe a slow week would be a good start to catch up on those zzzzs. How big is your indoor arena?

There's not an indoor arena, just an outdoor one that doubles as a field when needed. RU had 2 horses in there that she's trying to get weight on, one is an older Arabian, I think she might have teeth problems. The other is one she got at auction last year and turned out to be a cribber. She lost a ton of weight cuz she'd rather crib than eat. And, even when she is eating, she'll take breaks to crib.

Stormy scared me this morning. I got the horses fed, then went and got my cart and drove around to the front gate to get in my field. I also had 3 more buckets of sand w/me. I went to let Stormy out of the field so he could graze in RU's back yard. Well, he wouldn't go thru the gate. He turned around and went the other way. At first I was thinking it might have been a bit leery going thru. Normally, he ducks his head so I don't have to undo the electric. Yesterday he didn't and got shocked. :/ But, instead of going and grazing on the RB, or even trying to find some grazing in the field, he went and laid down. He'd stay down for a few, then get up, move to another spot, stand there for about a minute and lie back down. Needless to say, I started to get worried. All I could think of was colic. By the time I had the field all cleaned up, he was still doing it. So, I dumped the cart, put everything away, and got some banamine out. I dosed him w/that. Either he was just faking it and didn't want another dose, or it worked! W/in 5 minutes he was looking for something to graze on in the field. I let him out in RU's yard (I did have to undo the electric to get him to go out), and went and straightened up my tack shed.

Once that was done, I grabbed a halter and lead. I was going to lead him thru CL's field so I could give him his 2nd feeding. I had figured w/out her horses. They were all standing where they were in the way. I could not have lead him thru there easily, so I had to let him thru my field-including thru the area that I had just seeded. That meant I had to do the same when I let Misty in w/him, and then put them away. While they were grazing, I dug up some dock, buttercups and poke from near my tack shed.

Now I'm home and asking myself if I really want to do anything. I went to bed early last night-and couldn't sleep! :barnie

Other than feeding CL's horses, I'm not really doing any chores for anyone else. LF has some stuff that she wants done, but she'll pay me for it. Actually, tomorrow is supposed to be a nice day. So, I'm taking a salad, steak and a potato out w/me. I'll be making a fire and cooking lunch out there. I think that will relax me a ton. Plus, she and I are planning on going riding soon. No one else is available, and she's OK w/me wanting to stop and get a good look at stuff. So, this should work out well. I'm also wanting to go canoeing, but I NEED to redo my seat! I can't find the supplies around here, so I'm going to have to order them. I just don't remember to measure the seat so I can. :/

Looked on line for the caning supplies I'd need for my seat. And, I found the whole seat for not much more than the caning supplies would cost! So, it's on order. It's a one size fits all, and will need to be trimmed down a bit, but I'll have hubby do that, as well as drill the holes for the screws. But in the not too distant future, I'll be back on the water! Told him it was my mother's day gift. He liked that idea. :celebrate

Hey Deb,

I had the exact same thing happen with a colicy horse last year. She would just keep on laying down, but the vet couldn't detect anything. One dose of Banamine and she could plow through walls again within 5min. Sometimes i wonder about these horses :barnie

They like to keep us guessing. LF was there and wanted to know how I knew what it was. I told her it's a matter of knowing what's normal w/the horse. It's not the first time I've caught a mild colic like that, only last time I didn't have any banamine. So that cost me a vet visit. :/

I finally got a fairly decent night's sleep and am feeling much better. I'm hoping to get a lot done today. I'm hoping to get to the farm early. I may not take my lunch after all. They're calling for a high in the 80s! I may just want to come home and hide inside.

Good to hear you got some good rest. I am planning on sleeping in tomorrow too, have been working 6Am's to 11:30pm's the last few days plus I have a job interview today, so after that and all the chores I will be tired. Horses will have to live with a late breakfast tomorrow.

Colic is always such a guessing game. That is how I lost my 3 year old last Thanksgiving. It started as a mild colic and within a day she was balooned up to double her size. :(

Glad you caught the colic. Sometimes you're right - its just a matter of knowing the horse. We had a horse colic at the barn once and he was sleeping in the run-in shed and didn't come up for dinner, and then wouldn't eat when he was brought in. No other signs of distress. Of course if a couple of the other horses acted like he does normally, we'd be on the phone with the vet in a panic! :p

Sounds like you're making a lot of progress!! I learned something recently that could be useful to you. I was at a seminar and they were talking about rotating pastures, and said that if you just have one big area and don't have fenced off areas to rotate that you can spread manure, and that will keep the horses off of it for enough time for the grass to regrow. So if you've got a manure spreader that is one way to "rotate" your field. I thought that was really interesting and really useful!

I don't have a manure spreader, and have only about 1 acre for the horses to be on. That's why I try to clean the manure off everyday. It's not the most idea way to have the horses, but until I get get my own place, it's what I have to work with.

Stormy was fine today. Yesterday, he looked a bit shrunk in in the rear. Today, he looked and acted normal.

I didn't get done as much as I'd planned to. I didn't feel like moving, and it was later than I'd planned on when I left. But, I finally got the energy to leave and get to the farm. I got everyone fed, let Stormy out, cleaned the field and decided that I was going to work on getting rid of the weeds along the run in, and then along the fence. Of course, I had help.

While I was working on that, a guy came in w/a tractor pulling a wagon load of hay. And, he headed down the lane to where LF has her horses. When I was finished what I was doing, I headed on down. I had a feeling he was just dropping it off. I don't buy hay bales from him cuz they're too heavy! I can't always lift them, let alone stack them and I can't count on having anyone else around to help me. Well, I was right. He left the wagon there w/the hay all on it. So, I gave LF a hand. It took both of us to get some of these bales in place. Then as a thank you for helping her, she bought me lunch! I took my lap top and a printer w/me. When we got back, I set them up in my tack shed. Our shots are now ordered and will be going to her house. There are some areas where we ride where you need a permit. The only way to get the permit is on-line. She didn't have any idea how to get the permit. And, it can be a bit confusing. So, I got into the site for her, and got her her permit. We're planning on going riding in one of those areas soon and plan on doing a bunch of riding in the fall when we have some really great weather. Then, we talked for I don't know how long, so I basically got nothing else done.

I'm home relaxing now. I have leftovers from lunch. I think that's going to be my dinner.
