anyway - happy deer processing! someone out there is shooting a cannon and is freaking all the dogs out. i'm hoping they give some huge deer a flesh wound and it staggers into our yard and flops over. i'd be out there with my knives in a hot second

Really the cookbook is more about using winter root veggies, root cellar or not! I wish I had a root cellar too. I got the book because I don't know my rutabagas from turnips! I figured that in season veggies would be cheaper at the grocery. We'll see.

This deer left us with 44 lbs of meat! Much bigger than the first one. Everythings wrapped and frozen other than 20lbs ready for sausage.

I did something crazy to my hip this week so we've had 2 movie nights in a row so I could sit with ice on it. Maybe we'll get the sausage done tomorrow.

Guess what??? We're taking a vacation! We haven't done anything together for 3 years that involved going away somewhere. My folks wanted to give us 2 nights at a B&B for our Christmas presents. We decided to kick in an extra night so we can really relax.

MyT Man said he'd handle it and find something good. Rather than a B&B, he found a cabin in the Appalachian foothills. It met all of our requirements, fireplace, hot tub, and nothing to do. I'm so excited!

We always used to take a couple of days between Christmas and New Years to reprioritize and reset our goals and make sure we were on track. It will feel really good to do that again.

My Christmas Journey

Sitting in my chair enveloped in the predawn stillness as the earth lies at rest, covered in a mantle of snow, I clutch my favorite coffee mug in both hands as if willing the warmth toward my soul. There was a moment of peace when I first sat and then my brain began to kick into gear.
What's for breakfast?
How are the roads today?
Do you think you need to leave early?
don't forget to run by Sam's and the library on your way home tonight.
Oh, you also need to find a small foam cooler to ship your presents to Montana.
Have you tested that sausage batch yet? You can't send it without tasting it first to make sure it is gift worthy.
Weren't you going to do Christmas cards a week ago? The questions get louder and more demanding and the TO DO list gets longer. The ache and weariness line my face as I wonder why it seems like so much.

In that sweet pause, I hear a sound like the jingling of sleighbells on a cold sunny winter day. The silver sound says "My Child." I look around knowing I am alone. "Lovey."
Yes Lord?
"Come." "Don't you know that I will give you rest? Rest for your soul for my yoke is easy and my burden light?"

But Lord, I am not worthy of such a gift. I haven't been to church in years. I haven't read the Bible in weeks. I haven't done any volunteering this year and I can't remember the last time I tithed and

"Lovey." This time the silvery words seemed to cleave my soul like an icy arrow. The worries, TO DO lists and excuses faded until the silver voice and I were alone.

"Lovey, Do you love me?"

Silence. -What do you say to that? The icy arrow through my heart began to throb as my mind raced. Do I love you? What kind of question is that? I don't even know you I muttered angrily under my breath. How can I love you? My body tensed, wanting to escape. And yet, I had spoken the truth.

My Christmas Journey -Part 2

"Lovey, my dear sweet Lovey. Do you know how much I love you? Do you know that I have numbered the hairs on your head? I have a nickname for you. Oh, Lovey my child, if only you knew the plans I have for you."

I cocked my head to one side, listening. The aroma of coffee wafted through the air as the Eastern sky began to glow with the faint ember of the coming day.

Why? Why would you do that? I wondered. Number the hairs on my head? Ridiculous! Plans? What sort of plans? Who are you anyway?

"Ah. Now that is the question isn't it?" queried the voice, softer and further away. "Arise." The singular word was at once a command and an invitation.

Where were we going? What would happen if I refused? I clutched my mug tighter and debated. The past year lay like wreckage behind me. A rocky marriage, debt, a house that didn't sell, crushed hopes, and broken dreams. The rubble piled up mutely like a rock wall blocking the way.

Well, there sure wasn't anything to lose. I stood up wearily and looked at my feet.
