And that's the difference between a youngin and someone older like myself. If we get any snow for Christmas, I just want a couple of inches, just enough to make it pretty, and only on the lawns, not on the roads! And, if we got no more snow this winter, I'd be perfectly happy. :p

I don't hate it. In fact, I quite enjoy looking at snow. But, I don't want to have to deal w/all the problems it brings. If I could stay at home curled up in front of the fire w/the cats on my lap, the snow wouldn't bother me at all.

Thanks! Well, sometimes things just don't go as planned...

Called the guy this morning to let him know we were leaving so he could meet us 30 miles away from the place and approve us and the dogs before we were let on the property and have us follow him there so we don't get lost... He said roads were real bad and it is still snowing and one of the roads hadn't been plowed out and it had taken him 50 minutes to drive 12 miles yesterday.

No problem I said, we haven't had a vacation in two years, grew up in Montana, and I drive a Subaru. We're going to try it.

So he proceeds to give me country directions... Go 5 miles east until you get to the 4-way stop. Turn right and go up a big hill and go for about 6 miles until you get to hwy 1234. If you see a farm with a big red barn on your right, you've gone too far. Now go 5 miles until the road dead ends. Turn left and go eleven miles until you get to Hidden valley Road. The road goes straight up a hill. Go past the barn and then go aways and take your first road to the right. It'll meander a bit and then when you get to the fork in the road head off to the right. When you get there, that's us.

Got to the big hill. So far, so good. Some slush and ice on the road but nothing that creeping along at 3 miles per hour can't solve. Look at the hill. Shouldn't be a big deal. 3 people have been over it in chains already. Back up a little, put it in 2nd and give it a run. Well, we ended up stopped 2/3rds of the way up and started sliding. There is a drop-off through the forest on 1 side and a huge embankment up the other side. Got the car stopped crosswise and stopped so I could think about how to slide safely down. Pulled forward and back a couple of times trying to get the nose of the car headed down. No dice and the back is slipping off into the forest.

Along comes a good ole boy who stops and says. Looks like we got a situation here. I said yup. Can you help? Sure he says. I'm 62 years old and know a thing or two. I'm going to point you in the right direction and you're going to slide really fast with no brakes down the hill. Just steer. So that's what we did. Safely at the bottom he said we were still a good mile and a couple of hills past that to where we wanted to go.

Licking my wounded pride and swearing at my subaru under my breath for letting me down, we ended up heading home. We'll head back in the morning and the guy will meet us and take us in. Well, discretion is the better part of valor, they say. And he doesn't have a booking for Friday so we still get to stay the same length... it's just delayed a day!

OOOOh I hate the sliding down the hill thing! :ep Your story brought up a horrible memory!!

Here in Missouri we get ICE and I mean ICE!! One night many years ago I had an extra job for Christmas at a mall. (Working at the pet store :) ) I was trying to get home after the mall closed and the highway was iced over.

Being the city hillbilly that I am I was driving an old Plymouth with studded snow tires and 150 pounds of chicken feed in the trunk. I usually got where I was going too. Others did not. We have a couple of big hills on the highway just up from the mall and others were sliding backwards DOWN the hill. So far so good for me as I was sitting on top of the first hill just waiting for the fools to get out of the way so I could make my studded tire run at it.

Then it started. I started sliding from a STOP sideways and down the hill. Looking back it was probably my running car heating the ice enough to start it to melt. Nothing I could do. I started in the extreme left lane and at that place the right side of the road PLUNGED into a valley with a train track below. At the bottom of the two hills is a bridge going over the tracks and there is a guard rail before the bridge, but where I was was before the guard rail started.

So I would slide a bit and then stop. Slide then stop. People behind me in a traffic jam - stupid people stuck ahead of me. I slid into the next lane and the next. I was getting close to the shoulder and had decided I would bail out if it got much closer to that drop off when ... THANK GOD the traffic ahead of me moved. I said a prayer hit the gas and off I went down that hill (safely on the road) and up the other one as well.

I hadn't stopped shaking when I got home.

YOU be careful tomorrow.
