Everyone's dinner sounded good, but OMG I was sooooooooo bad tonight!

DH came in about 6p and said that he'd had a late lunch so not to worry about dinner. I pouted and he said "what?".... I told him I wanted to go out for my pre-birthday dinner. Now mind you, it's over a week before my birthday - but OUT WE WENT! To my favorite steak place, no less. I won't do fast food, and I rarely do chain restaurants of any kind. I figure if I'm gonna go out (which is rare for us) I'm gonna go somplace NICE! So we did. Oh my.. for an appetizer we had deep fried asparagus topped with crab meat.. then salad.. then I had a bacon wrapped filet - topped with more crab meat... DH had a peppercorn crusted strip steak ... and I had a piece of triple chocolate mousse cake for dessert.. oh yea.. and 2 glasses of a wonderful Malbec wine. DH had one bite of dessert, not much help, and I couldn't finish it - but it was sooooooo delish! We both had a cup of coffee and I know I'll regret that. So, to counteract the late night caffeine - I'll have another glass of wine. ;)

I'm one of those folks who usually thinks it's not worth it to go out... I'd rather throw something together here. I have to admit though that sometimes you just need to do it. We find that we relish the times when we are truly spontaneous - and tonight was one of those times.

Because I finished a big project today - I dont even feel guilty. DH is so on board with all my ideas- he's so supportive. And, tonight when I told him that I wanted to do turkeys next - he didn't even balk. He's such a dear!

So, in the spirit of fun and marital bliss - maybe a quick soak in the hot tub and back to reality tomorrow.

GIRL - I am so excited for your possibilities! I believe tha tgood things come to good folks so I know good things are coming your way.

I've never raised turkeys before so I know I'll need help. I'm on a waiting list for the Midget Whites I want. I've heard that turkey poults are just plain stoooooooopid, lol. They'll prolly fit in just fine around here.

They need more care than most, and they are pretty sensitive, especially to drafts I have found out...so yeah, let me know when you get some and I will try to help guide you through. We have raised about 30 out of ours to date. I kept the 3 best ones, and have a male and two females. I am SO looking forward to breeding them this year!!!

Is it true that you need to have some chicks to teach the poults how to drink and eat and such? Is it best if you have a broody hen who could take care of the poults? I'm a turkey virgin so I know nothing! (Deb - do NOT jump on that statement, lol!)

Chicks do help, but aren't a necessity. Broodies help, but again, not necessity. The poults will learn from us, but a good percentage won't learn on their own where the feed and water is, and they ARE dumb birds, and sensitive to heat cold breeze, etc. NEVER move the feed or water to a different spot once they are trained until they get about 6-8 weeks old, they can and WILL forget :/ After 8 weeks, you almost can't kill the darn things, but for the first two months I have often wondered how in the world there are still turkeys on this earth

Wow - just wow! So..... My usual idea that most critters have a strong survival instinct is just wrong in regards to turks? Okay, I'll adapt - cuz it looks like THEY won't!

Yep, pretty much sis  Now some of the heritage breeds are MUCH better, but a lot of the common ones, are just dumber than dirt. I have heritage bronze, and they aren't too bad, I've lost a few to stupid. OTOH I have a friend who had some Broad Breasted Bronze meaties, and they were all mentally retarded :hu Common sense has been bred out of most turkeys.

I can't recall....are the midget whites heritage? They may be better than some other breeds.

Midget Whites are considered a heritage breed. They are the newest (developed in the 1960's) and the smallest, but are supposed to be very tasty! I guess I'll find out- one way or the other. I'm on a waiting list because they are kinda hard to come by.

Back to work tomorrow cuz for whatever reason - I haven't hit the lottery yet - ugh.
