Some people DO have dogs for that and I had even started training Gracie in that direction. Bought the book and went through the first few lessons - stopped when we got the pump. The training is really cool - it involves collecting some of DH's saliva (that part is yucky) when his blood sugar is low - and when it's normal - and when it's at different levels. You put it in little containers and store it in the freezer. Then you expose it to the dog and let it sniff and praise, praise, praise when she sniffs the one that represents his lowest blood sugar. Then you start introducing the other samples. You basically ignore her when she sniffs the one with normal blood sugar levels and continue to praise when she picks out the one with the low blood sugar saliva. She got that part down in just a couple days. Then - and this is harder to do - whenever DH would have a hypoglycemic event I would bring her to him and have her stay beside him. DH would hold out the low blood sugar container and praise her. (but remember he gets stupid when he's low so it was like training them both, lol) She got to where she wouldn't leave his side when he was low because she was getting constant positive reinforcement and she LIVES for that! The next step would have been to have her alert to DH by pawing or jumping on him....but we kind of stopped the lessons because that's when we got the pump. Maybe we should pick it back up.

He still doesn't feel so good. I totally understand that because I truly believe he was mere minutes away from a catastrophic event....:( He doesn't remember most of it. But he does remember feeling like he was drifting away. :(

Geeze I spend a lot of time trying to keep this guy alive and healthy, lol! But, I guess he's worth it!

Went out to feed a while ago and found that the goats have been in the feed room.... GREAT! The only thing they got into was the beet pulp so I don't think it's a great risk to them. They're all still running around demanding food and guess what - they're NOT getting fed tonight "jutincase." I still have to milk so we'll see how well they like getting milked with maybe only a handful of alfalfa pellets.

I brought Lucy up to the front area - where the mama's and babies are - cuz she should be due in a few days. I only wrote one breeding date down for her - but that doesn't mean there isn't another date that I totally didn't write down. That was during the time the folks were here and I was a terrible goat mother during that time. She's got an udder - but it's not real full - and her ligaments have been dropping a little bit every day - so we'll see. I have Sunday as day 145, but she may well go beyond that. Not going to worry too much about her - she'll be a 2FF and I think she can handle things just fine.

We've got another line of thunder storms that are supposed to be headed this way. Who knows if it'll hit us or not - kinda looks like it's going to go east of us again. Not going to complain because we've had a steady drizzle since yesterday. Every drop is soaking in and there's no puddling anywhere which is awesome! Whether or not we get the thunderstorms we're supposed to get a night of really cool weather. It's going to get down to the high 40's overnight and a bit of wind. Yay...

Going to go out and milk and then feed the monster - I mean Conan!

I hope the experience gives DH incentive to discuss the pump workings with you! Is he good about checking his sugar levels?
It's not only scary but, like you say, life threatening. They do feel tired after such episodes, sometimes for a couple days.

So how is he doing now? Any idea what started this -- maybe pump isn't working right? or some "operator error"? I see a visit to get it checked out!

I have "must have written wrong day" doe, too....if that helps you feel better.......so, three are due anytime between last week and end of April... I hate me when I do this. Yep, all have kidded couple times before, so watch & wait. The one who I DID get right date had hers on time & the two doelings are cute & jumpy! One week tomorrow & feel the horn bumps now. Picking up my dehorning iron Sunday. Geesh.....hate the deed but, gotta do!! :hit

@Mini Horses - it was operator error. He has an insulin pump AND a continuous glucose monitoring system (sensor). The pump and the sensor are supposed to "sync" and communicate with each other. This was his first time using a new sensor and he skipped a step when installing it. But - the ONE night that he wasn't all hooked up.... geeze.

He's had a rough day. He's been very emotional, had an upset stomach, and is having palpitations...none of these are life threatening...but leads to feeling like ca-ca all day.

So ya'll haven't had a boss for 10 years, and now you have to interview you new boss? After 10 years, why do you even need a boss? :th

Conan needs his smarty pants taken down a notch! Sounds like you did just that! LOL

Glad that you got stuff done in the garden and got the gift of a slow soaking rain. Back when Houston was surrounded by rice fields, they called it a million dollar rain.

WOW! What a scare you had with your husband! I am thankful that you hit the emergency mode and did what you had to do. I bet he's thankful too, or at least he will be when he gets his clear thinking back. That was close. I like the idea of training Gracie, she could be back up for mechanical failure.

I would totally train her. After all what if the SHTF and there are no batteries for the pump? Nothing better than a dog with a job!

Glad he's OK, but sorry he's feeling awful today. That is terrifying.

Maybe I didn't 'splain that well.

I've worked with the gal (R) that was our boss for 15 years - since 2003. The first 5 years we were co-workers. When our original boss left in 2008, I encouraged my co-worker (R) to take over the vacancy. She finally agreed, and for the next ten years (2008 until present) she was the director of the program. (We then hired another person to work in her former position and that person has been with the program for ten years.) Former boss (R) took another position at the college on March 1st, this year. That's why we are interviewing to find a new director.

It's taken all day for DH to get sorta kinda back to home base. He's still shaky but much better.

I may have to see if Gracie can pick up where she left off... She's so stinkin' smart!'

May have to cover some of the garden tomorrow night - getting down to the 40's... Crazy weather!

Does that mean Gracie gets to be a house dog? She'll pick up fast if she gets to sleep in comfort! Lol

I hope your DH will be more careful now, after this! How is he doing now? I really like the idea of training Gracie to alert him when his blood sugar gets too low. She sounds like a clever girl and a quick learner.
