Thanks, Vicki! I almost got the office next to mine - but I was given the choice and the other one had a big awesome view of the air conditioner.....
Hard choice, huh?
SD - I'm really liking the idea of the wash basin if I can find an antique somewhere. But your washcloth idea would've been great this past weekend...I was right across from the food and eating tables!
Part of my heart is RACING with excitement and the other part is throbbing with anxiety.
So...I've been combing craigslist lately. I search for goat, goats, doe, doelings, you get the idea just to see what people are doing. I've been super good and never respond - even if they have goats I'd really love to have. Today, I broke down.
I found two ads that I missed in the end of February.
One said they had 2 registered nubian does, 4 and 5 years old, for $100 a peice and would only sell them together.
Now....there's several key words in there which only got better as they guy returned my call. Turns out, these registered nubian does are also disbudded and open. They had been bred previously but the guy didn't breed them last fall because he wants out.
O...M...G.... my mouth fell to the floor. Here's the ad.
Then, the other ad was WICKED LOCAL. As in I pass this place every day on my way to work and it's about 3 miles if that from my house. They have, get this, Nubians, Saanans, and Togg does, dry, disbudded and for $100 a peice. All have been bred in the past, not too much info on the ages.
Got an email back - she's got 4 Saanan's left and since it's her daughter's deal and the daughter wants to get into dwarf breeds they'd be interested in trading for some of my nigerian mixes.
I love me those nubian ears, but I was reading about how much milk a saanen gives, that sounds pretty cool.
How many goats were you thinking of adding to your herd? If you really only wanted one, the second place sounds better. More choices. You could go and see the animals first, right? You could always check them all out first and then decide what you want to do. That would be my inclination, just go the far away one second so if those are the best deals you just buy them on the spot.
Well.... I haven't yet really decided how many per se.
I will always keep Eloise, Opi and Fudgie. That's a given. I'm fairly sold on keeping Hash, Fudgie's white eared doeling. I'm not so sold on keeping Rocky, the brown eared doeling or my two other yearlings, Cara and Nilly (Eloise's daughters) and definitely not keeping their kids (they were bred a short time ago).
So...here's what I'm thinkin'. I'm going to go look at the further away nubian does and make a judgement call. I got an email from the guy with pictures...dang they're beautiful. He said he used to show them at all the big fairs around here like the Big E and stuff.
I'm also going to visit the local place and see about trading a Saanan for something....maybe a Saanan for two somethings if it's right. The local place doesn't have any nubians or toggs left, which would have been my first choices.
So, all things considered, if I get the two nubians and rehome Cara, Nilly and their kids I'll be at 6 does. I'm not a Saanan person, but I'd trade for 1 if they'd let me. So that puts me at 7. In my eyes, that's not bad at all. We have the room, that's for sure, and have plans for a barn to be built this year.
Now, the other thing is milking. That's a lot of boobies for just me. So if/when they start kidding I'll just milk the best milkers and let kids dry up the other does, so to speak. Obviously, if kids are pulled early and gals bag up tight I'll help dry them up.
