OK....here's the scoop.

They are 3 and 4 years old (I have no idea who's older) and kid this past fall. They are not currently in milk, and both looked pretty good to me. Need a hoof trim, but other than that they were really personable and were enjoying my scratchins. I lifted up legs to see how trimming would be, tried to feel udders, but given that it was snowing like the dickens they really didn't want to be bothered.

The gal then came over to my house and saw Cara and Nilly and said they were exactly what she was looking for. She wanted to take them soon so they had time to get used to her before they kid. I asked her what she wanted to do as far as trading and she said two for two and I said my only problem was the kids. I said "let's wait and see what they have and we can talk then". She said OK and that was that.

Then she called me a short time later and said she had thought about it and think she should get to keep all the kids from Cara and Nilly since her goats were registered show goats.

:ep Well, that sorta changes things, doesn't it!

I explained that I didn't know that before hand and asked if she was going to give me the papers when they dropped of the girls on Saturday and she said of course so. I'd just have to register them under our name.

Since my gals, even though I think they are perfect, aren't your registerable show goats (4H, sure, but not fancy shows) I thought that sounded fair. I did some math and in my area I could get anywhere from $100 - $150 for a mixed breed doe and $50-$125 for a wether. But if the goats are 'fancier' it attracks a whole different group of people. I'd be able to provide people like me with backyard breeds with Eloise, Fudgie, Opi and Hash and toss out some registered babies with Jenny and Katie and hopefully those two nubian does.

Needless to say I accepted the deal. Saturday my two 'first born' babies leave for their new home - kids and all. :hit But, they are only going down the road, quite literally, and I can see them when I want.

Let's just say I'm venturing into two worlds - one I'm familiar with and the other I have no clue about. Good thing my neighbor is up on all that stuff!

If you happen to go see the saanens sometime when you might want company.....
oh man, did I say that outloud??
Yep - you sure did.

Missed me by that much. BUT - they have two more Saanan does still available that they would like to have go together. $100 each (not sure if that's with Reg papers or not) or they might make a combo deal for the both of them. You want to visit Saturday morning and meet the newbies? Around 9 am....

wink wink, nudge nudge

Trading is awesome! I think you got a great deal with the 2 Saanens. You may be able to bring them back into milk if they kidded in the fall. It's worth a shot! And they should produce lots of milk for you! :D

Thanks ladies..I keep thinking it over and over in my head trying to convince myself.

There's no way to bring these ladies back into milk - they're as dry as the desert in Arizona. But if I got desparate I could always try to force one into heat with my nubian buck this spring. I guess that's what they did last year, which is why they had fall kids.

Weeeeellll......

After his initial disappointment that I wasn't going to make dinner before I went to visit the goats.....

He sorta ignored me for the rest of the night.

Still haven't told him about the nubians, either.

Or the shed that I want to go look at.

:D

I'm a do-er not a think-er! I'm gonna stop, pick up some wine, cuddle up close and smooth talk him.....

BUT...I just remembered this. I found a haybine for sale and we're slowly aquiring hay equipment. So far we've gotten a baler and a rake - so I'm being really nice about letting him get whatever he wants....
