No kidding SD! Sorry for the long absense - it's getting crazy here and I'm prolly going to disappear for another few days...

My whole body aches. But I guess it's all worth it.

We've been working hard on prepping the house/yard for the big party that's on Saturday. A bunch of people who've never been to our house are coming so we want to make a good impression - plus it's an excuse to get all the things that we've put on the back burner to the front and fire it up! Right now we're completing a retaining wall that we started and half a$$ finished 6 years ago - the crushed rock we used slid down and the dogs/kids used it as a walkway/slide for long enough. The concrete has been poured and block ordered so now we just have to make it look nice again.

Big G rebuilt the fire pit and boy does it look nice. Level, straight and even cemented together on the top! The old fire pit was just a bunch of rocks tossed together in a pile - he tried to shape it into a square, but over the years rocks fell, people broke them, etc so it was time to make it nice and sturdy.

Yesterday was meat processing day! We had some friends over who've processed many meaties and so they showed me how to get it done.

I had way too good of a time. I was a skinner/gutter and Big G was a killer. little g and his friends (our friend's kids) just stood laughing at the chicken bodies and heads as they flopped around kicking in the air, doing summersaults after having their heads chopped off.

We did not take pictures or video...it was so fricken hot and we had spent all day long framing the retaining wall foundation, filling it with concrete, running back to Lowes for MORE concrete that by the time it was D Day for the birds we were pretty cranky.

A few beers, I mean birds into it, though, we were on a roll! 15 birds (they brought 3 of their older layers to process) and an hour later we were bagging and freezing dead bodies!

One of the meaties was a rooster....he turned into beer can chicken for dinner and dang, was he good!

Well that sounds like an extremely productive week! Your party sounds like fun.

I'm glad you have been gone because you were busy and getting stuff accomplished and nothing wrong! Don't worry about us but remember to take pics and remember the stories to tell us about the party afterwards, we will want a full update about how much fun you all have. And pics of all this hard work and prep of course.

Maybe before and after pictures?

Sure - I'll take a picture of me all dressed in my party clothes then another passed out on the floor....oops...I mean I'll behave. :D

I'm really excited for it, though. We've been prepping for months!

Heck ya we skinned them! I wasn't gonna waste my time with that plucking crap.....well, I wanted to attempt it on at least one bird, but we rarely eat the skin that we decided it was just quicker to skin. I must say I'm a master at that now! And I figured out that if I took care when cutting out the butt feathers I could keep the intestines intact and show the kids how long they actually are....hee hee hee...it was too funny!

Did you weigh any?
Nope. Didn't do that either. We guesstimated at their weights and figured each bird was at least 3lbs, dressed but on the bones. These chickens were bigguns for sure! This was a quick job because the birds were getting so huge I was bitching left and right that we had to get them done NOW. Especially with the party coming...I didn't want a hen house full of birds with people looking at them saying "Aww...how can you eat those?"

We actaully thought of freezing the heads and then nailing them to the tops of the fence posts in the yard and see if anyone would notice.

Oh, that reminds me of a story......

One day last winter, while my birds were on strike and I wasn;'t getting many eggs, I sent the kids up the road to another hobby farmer who had a sign saying FRESH BROWN EGGS. they jumped on the quad and headed up the road. When they got there, they knocked on the door. but then quickly turned back, not knowing if anyone was answering or not. They had a string of chicken feet hanging from the door knob. So now we refer to the as the chicken fee tpeople. :sick Why on earth would someone do that?!?!?!?
