I have really learned a LOT from you all. I now know more about fermenting than I ever thought possible just from lurking on that thread.
Also I enjoy the companionship. It is nice to feel a part of a community instead always being of the weirdo that lives in the city with chickens and fruit trees.
Farm, I have some questions for you on the tanning thread.....
Speaking of fermenting....I split off some of my homemade vinegar today and BOTH jugs had a lovely big mother in them! Split one mother in two and am using it to make yet another jug of vinegar.
LOVE learning all these neat things! And this forum has made me actually read more so that I can share more goodies on here.
i'm learning lots and getting lots of great ideas, but the thing that has been MOST important to me about this forum is the it has solidified my resolve to do the things i've been wanting to do for so long. i've been plodding along towards being SS for a long time but with no one to talk to about it i just couldn't really get the fire lit under my backside. this forum, especially all the great people on here, has definitely fanned the flames! even our arguments and disagreements just serve to make me more passionate about what we are all doing. i love it.
Y'all don't be dissin' books, now. It was books that inspired me to buy my farm and to start farming sustainably, to get into raising poultry for meat and to start gardening biointensively, as well as how to do all of those things. Simple living books have helped me to live a simple lifestyle and money and frugality books to get my finances under control.
Forums are fine, but they will never replace books in my life. I could live without forums. I don't see how I could live without books.
This forum has made me realize, that perhaps my mom and dad weren't as dumb as I thought they were, back when I was a snot nosed punk
Seriously though, I check into this place multiple times per day to what is new and exciting in everyone's life, to see what new thing one of you may have discovered, and to pick up new ideas on becoming more SS. This site is a gold mine of information and friendship and I love ya all.
Bee, what a great thread. Let me think....has it changed my life? Well, I wouldn't say it has changed my life, as much as it has enhanced mylife. We have been working towards liveing self sufficient for several years now..and never knew the correct "label" I always said... "we are just living off our land, we eat what we grow, and grow what we eat" I have learned many things. Some I have tried, and some I am going to try.( like the greenhouse made with old windows and doors, I am collecting them now) I didnt know about the charcoal thing with pigs either, and was thinking the same thing about my sheep. Cant hurt to try!
I love reading about everyones success. Gives me ideas. I have no parents or grandparents alive to give me the helpfull advice, so I rely on this forum. This is a great source of wisdom.....and I am very thankfull I found you ALL!
I love this place. I have learned so much there is no way to list it all. I am not sure I would have ever thought about so many things on my own. Or it would have taken me many years to read enough books to discover some of those things.
A quick example is heirloom seeds. I had no clue that you could not save all seeds. I just thought when they did not come up it was something I did wrong. Now I am sure that somewhere along the line I would have found this info somewhere else. But you all saved me the time and hair pulling.
I never thought about fermenting until reading all of your stories and info.
All the lively discussions, laughs, worrying over each others problems and celebrating successes, and yes even the family arguments. Because we are a family in so many ways.
Enhanced my life, changed my way of thinking about so many things, and you all have been there when I needed a friendly ear. This forum has been so much a part of my life that I would definitely have to say yes it has changed how I do things and for
the better.
Now DH says you all are his arch nemesis. You keep filling my head full of ideas that involve work for him.
