3 days 'til April break. Can he make it? He had a decent day Monday but another bad day yesterday. Teacher says he was unable to focus all day; lots of foot tapping and rocking around in his chair (so get him up and moving!!!!!) He was annoyed with a classmate (who my mother has watched getting in DS's face in the past) and raised a fist at him. He lost recess for that but forgot to come in so he's lost recess for the rest of the week. Wouldn't want to be in a classroom with him all afternoon after that.
He did earn a positive behavior note in the cafeteria on Monday so at least someone is noticing the good behaviors too.
The computer tech at my school also works in his and told me that last week the principal sent around a memo reminding teachers what time they were supposed to be in their classrooms in the morning and to call the office if they weren't going to make it so that coverage could be arranged until they got there-. Also they were told to refrain from using cell phones during class time. Guess who the biggest violator of both those policies is? Yup, DS's teacher. Ha!
We have a Child Study Team meeting scheduled for the Wednesday after break. DS sees his pediatrician the Monday during break week. I've already dropped off the ADD checklists for him to look at with a note that we will be looking for alternatives to medication.
After we return from break we have 35 more days of school. I have not told his public school he's not coming back. I suspect it will come up at the CST meeting when someone there brings up planning for next year. I don't feel it's fair for them to put a lot of thought and effort into that when I'm already sure he's not going to be there. I've held off because I don't want them to write him off as soon to be someone else's problem. At some point they'll get the records request I signed at the new school.
three days I can do three more days I can
:/

At our school we have a policy that NO KID misses recess as a punishment. Instead they have to walk laps around the playground as an alternative punishment. This gives the ADHD kids that are often in "trouble" a vent for that extra energy.

You should suggest this alternative to the teacher instead of him missing recess.

I used to hate it when they'd make my kids miss recess! and it wasn't for behaviors, either! it was usually because I forgot to sign a paper and send it back. I went rounds with the teacher AND the principal and told them that it was NOT Ok to punish my child for something that I was responsible for.

The principal said it was to teach my kids to "remind me" and responsibility.

My reply to him was, "Isn't there a phone on your desk? I now hold you responsible to call me if I've forgot to send something back in."

They didn't like that, said it wasn't their responsibility to make sure I sent everything back, to which I replied, "Nor is it my child's responsibility!"

The schools here hate me. One teacher accused me of being a helicopter mom because I enforced my right to know everything that went on with my kids when they weren't in my care.

I'm sure they think of me as a helicopter mom too. They just think I'm nuts in general. I sent DS in with a plastic bento pick to eat his watermelon chunks one day. He was showing it to a girl sitting near him. One of the adults assumed he was jabbing her with it and I was accused of sending him to school with a potential weapon! His teacher asked me what I was thinking. I replied, "I was thinking since he's had one in his lunch at least two dozen times before without incident today would be no different!"
Urg!
The elementary school that I work in (same district) has a policy that only the principal can take recess away. I'm tempted to talk to her about it but don't want to pit her against a colleague. It is technically against Board policy altogether. I'm trying to find it in print again but am having difficulty. So frustrating. I will suggest walking laps but I have a feeling that yesterday he was supposed to come in to finish the work he hadn't done in the morning. That's an easy one. Send it home and he'll do it there instead of watching TV or anything else "electronic".
Miss Martha is enjoying her new digs very much. It took her all of a day to figure out the hopping up and down but now she's all over. I'm happier because I'm not as worried about her getting enough exercise. I can't let her out with the puppy and the fence needs repairs so he hasn't been out in the yard for long periods of time lately. DH has begun the repairs. I'm going to add one more shelf for her.
I am eager to fast forward two week to the CST meeting (well, not really since it would mean giving up my April vacation...). I think but I'm not sure, that I have final say as to whether he gets labeled ADD no matter what the doctor's findings are.

Teacher left before DS so I don't know how today went. DS thinks he did okay. Helpful
I talked to my principal and she agreed that a) taking recess as a consequence is against district policy and b) having students walk laps is much more appropriate. She suggested that herself. Her recommendation was that I speak with the principal prior to the meeting and let her know what my specific concerns are. I emailed her and brought up looking for a more appropriate consequence to losing recess as well as letting her know our concerns about medications for ADHD should that be the diagnosis the Dr. comes up with. I have not heard back but expect to this evening. She always answers emails the same day. At the very least she will let me know she will get back to me after speaking with the teacher.

Boy do I remember the days when I had a child with 'issues' going through school! It is not fun, very stressful for you and him, and the teachers as well, no doubt.

It is a good thing your son has a good mom like you to watch out for him. Kids with lessor parents can get eaten by the "system". Pat yourself on the back. :clap
