I believe the cattle breed in the pictures is the Red Devon. It is one of the oldest cattle breeds raised in the United States AND the breed of cattle that my friend has for his oxen team. :)
Still can't find it but I bet you're right.

Actually I will be visiting a friend in Burlington the weekend of May 15th. I don't think we will make it up to Sturbridge, though. I wish I could stay more than a weekend.
Another time then...
just wave my way as drive by!
Too bad Burlington is so far from you. I would check out your place!
Not a whole lot to check out right now but it would be fun. Have a great visit with your friend :)

Oh, I will, Henrietta. I am way overdue for a road trip. And what could be better than a trip to your beautiful state.

:D LOL I'd love to get out of it this week but other than a trip to the in-laws I'm not going to make it. Was hoping to get to Bennington VT but a week only holds so many days and Little League is taking up quite a few of them!

I love Vermont. I love New England, in fact. I miss the beauty and the people. I miss Burlington, VT, Newport, RI, and of course, Boston. I miss Mount Monadnock in NH. Eek. I need to get East more often.

Do you go to Mystic at all? My daughter and I used to love that place.

We do, usually once a year, to meet an online buddy I met through another forum many years ago. We've met at the aquarium several times. I think DS's class is going there for their end of the year field trip. I'm hoping I can chaperone ;)

Hen take a look at this and compare it with your pics.

The only difference is that this pic is polled Devon.
Sure looks like it! The red color is identical or very close.
Aha! Just found this in an article about the village:

The training of our teams begin when they are born. Over the past two years, visitors have seen Bright and Broad, a pair of young Devon steers, being trained

Just as I thought!

My friend who has the oxen team used to volunteer at Missouri Town which is a living history village in our area. He said that they use the Devons because of the long time connection between the breed and early pioneers in this country. The Devons are good foragers, calve easily, milk well and make great oxen. What more could a pioneer family ask for?

Not sure! These have great personalities as well. They come right to the fence for nose rubs sometimes. OOooooh! I have to find a picture I took there two years ago of the calves running to be fed. Precious!
