Wheat has so many sneaky disguises that it can wear. Like being called modified food starch. There is no easy way other than to study up or just leave it alone. :/

Yeah, I know....we just tried to buy a gatorade...modified food starch, tried powerade....natural flavor, tried propel.....natural flavor, tried rootbeer.....carmel color, tried sunkist orange soda.....natural flavor.

Poor girl just wanted a little treat because her brother was getitng a stinking gatorade. :he

I am going to have to get a list of additives that contain gluten and flash card the poor kid till she knows them all :th

Well there is always chocolate! :p I certainly hope the studies that seem to indicate there are health benefits from chocolate ... especially dark chocolate are right. Another old favorite I have found is a Tootsie Roll!

I know exactly what you're talking about except that DS has no siblings so the pressure isn't as bad. We've had some tears.

No Tootsie Rolls when they're also allergic to corn and milk. :(
We do keep some dairy free chocolate on hand though.

Link to the bread:

I got a big hug when I picked up DS. First comment-I loved the bread! Thank you!
Second comment- I didn't get my goal sheet from Ms. P again. That's twice in two weeks she was too busy at the end of the day to give it to him. How is her system supposed to work if she can't follow through? And what message is she sending him? If I don't get it tomorrow I'll email for it and cc the principal.

The more allergens the harder it is to find that "perfect treat". The secret is to work hard and find at least one then keep it on hand.

When I first went gluten free I suffered and felt great self pity. I have always been a bread person and at first I did not even have a single bread that I could stand to eat. This sounds awful, but when I found Bob's Red Mill chocolate cake, it became my crutch. (it's ingredients read like the renowned Black Bean cake!) I baked one up (no icing) cut it in hunks and froze it. Then whenever I was deep in a pity party ... out would come a huge hunk of that cake! :hide

Now days I eat much more like a normal low carb person. My mind and body have both adjusted. But at first I NEEDED that cake occasionally. ;)

I getcha! I went cold turkey. It worked for me but I do suffer around freshly baked bread! Right now the weight loss and the way I've been feeling are great incentive to keep going.
Of course all of this is much harder for an 8 yo boy to wrap his head around. He's spent the year being treated like he's different from everyone else in his class anyway. Now he's different because he can't eat what everyone else eats. His best buddy in class also has some food allergies which makes it just a little bit easier for him.

Wifezilla's post on another thread about blood pressure just reminded me of this:
I was at the dentist Wednesday getting my teeth cleaned. The hygenist, whom I've known for a long time, was taking my blood pressure. She also has adopted children and her son is autistic. She's had huge battles with their school system over appropriate programming for him. We got to talking about DS's situation this year. While she was taking my BP! I can't remember the numbers but it was actually fine. (It's never been high.) I figure if it was good then I'm doing something right!
I picked lettuce from my deck for my lunch for the first time. I've also got buttercrunch ready to pick that I will use for chicken wraps tonight for dinner. Mmmmmmmm!
