I would think that you could still plant asparagus. Our self seeded plants come up from early spring to late summer. You just need enough time for the crowns to establish themselves before your winter sets in. So the plant need to have time to grow and develope nice fronds, so it can store energy in the fat roots over winter.
I'll have to see if I can find some! I love it, the boys hate it. More for me!

interesting about your lowes adventures... we just got a new tiller - a troybuilt - and the dang thing worked for exactly 15 minutes then something flew off the flux capacitor and then everything started smoking.

so we called them...and then took it back. its 45 mins each way for us to drive so i wasnt happy at all. AND we had gas in the broken on. harumph.

but i guess the good news is that it rained so much we couldnt use it anyway? (desperately trying to find the silver lining.....)

if its not too late i'd go with a shorter wall with.. you guessed.. you can tack up (with those u-shaped stables) hog panels above the solid part of the wall. my thinking would be you could have better air flow so it doenst get so hot in there. of course if you have little hens they might pop thru but the big priority is to keep the goats out of the hen feed. i think my chickens like hanging out with the goats.

sorry you are having all these bumps in the road. its easy to get overwhelmed when there is so much to do. best to eat the elephant one bite at a time.

Not too late and you make a great point! Thanks!
I do have some littler hens that get up pretty high off the ground, but like you said, it's more of an issue to keep the goats out of the chicken side.

Nope, still don't know when the goats are coming home. BUT:
we have new residents in our backyard anyway! Every spring we have Baltimore Orioles around. One year (in 21) we found a nest in the winter that had fallen from one of our oak trees. We've never another one since. Until today!! There was a male flying around our backyard, which is not unusual this time of year. He flew to a branch in an oak near our deck and DH spotted the nest! We watched for a while and seconds after DH brought my camera out the female showed up with a moth or something in her mouth and went into the nest! We ate on the deck and the male kept scolding us. We must have babies!!

I don't know if they used any of Tortoise's rabbit fur or not. It was within a few feet of that tree. We'll find out if the nest comes down this winter. DH has to hold off on taking down some of the lower limbs on the tree for a bit but that's okay.

The other big news: DS ate a bing cherry and LIKED IT. Then he had another and another and another!

Flux capacitater? Way to many nerds on this site!

H23, I would go with chicken wire or a scrap of fencing that will keep chickens out if you have it. You don't have to go all the way to the ceiling. I had stupid chickens getting into my goat stalls and pooping everywhere and making it very unsanitary for birthin' babies. You need to have at least one chicken-free zone.

Now that the baby is bigger and sturdier, I often put a chicken in with her for company. But the poopin' everywhere was just too much.

Here, the chickens come and go freely in the communal stall and the stall on the end, but I have one that is clean and under control.

My hens also pecked the babies when they were little....the navel, the hoohoo, the milk foam on the edge of their little mouths. :barnie And they would not leave the does' hoohoo's alone when....er....it's too gross to say and OFG is nearby. I don't want her barfing on your porch!

LOL it's way too late for cleaning barf off the porch. 5:30 am is coming waaaaaaay too soon! But I have (ick-store bought from a box) cupcakes in the oven for one of my autistic students who is turning 15 tomorrow. She begged and we got permission for me to make them for her. All I know is the rest are NOT coming home with me! I had a couple of raw almonds to take my mind off how good they actually smell baking. Now to clean up the mess. by hand with no dishwasher &*%@%^*#@$
Also made mayo and added it to homemade bleu cheese dressing then made a salad of MY lettuce, some radishes, snow peas, and fennel topped with left over grilled steak for my lunch.

wonder if it's a coincidence the nerds ended up on my thread.........

Just imagine....that dressing could soon be made with homemade feta....or you can make your own blue cheese, too, if you get the mold....oooooo, just remembered, you can buy a little piece and use it to get a new batch moldy. I want to try this one this season! Even though I don't like blue cheese. I don't like store bought feta, either, but my own is way yummy!

As a person who has Star Trek: DS9 on in the background right now, I shall have to disagree with the "too many" bit about nerds.

I suspect there are a lot of closet nerds out there in the general population, it just shows more here because we all fly our geek flags high 'n proud...
