Hey Henrietta, I have one of these for my hay. http://www.harborfreight.com/portable-garage-42211.html I can store several bales, don't recall now how many I can get. Right now, I have about 6 bales of hay, as well as 18 bales of straw, metal cans w/goat, rabbit and chicken feed in it, a table I trash picked, and a saddle, and still have plenty of room.

I'll admit that last winter was tough on the tarp, and it did end up ripping this spring, but rather than get the replacement, I just got a 20 x 20 tarp. It was much cheaper, and seems to be doing just as good.
Thanks for sharing that! I had suggested getting one to DH but he wasn't sure it would work. He's concerned because we have so many trees and they do tend to drop branches all winter. Worth a shot if we can just replace it with a tarp should it rip!

If you can have it where it's not too close to the trees, that would probably be better. I'm thinking that the one time I did fill it, I had close to 100 bales in it. But, I don't need to have that many at home any more. I have a bigger one I got in TSC out at the farm for the hay for the horses, so this is just for the goats hay. And, since I only have 2 goats, there's plenty of room!

Not a whole lot of tree-free area around here! But we'll try.
Hey, if you happen to live in CT or close enough that your local bookstore carries CT books in its "Local" section and you happen to wander in, pick up a copy of Diane Smith's Seasons of Connecticu and turn to page 49. It features DH's Principles of Technology class and their hovercrafts. I took the top photo and quite possibly the bottom one as well!! DH got credit, but oh well....

I live in South Jersey, so I'm a bit far from you. But, my sister lives in Fairfield-2 blocks from Long Island Sound. How far is that from you?

Well, CT is a small state but she's about as far from me as you could get! LOL
My uncle lives in Sweetwater, outside Hammonton. Anywhere near you?

We slapped a hoophouse together to use as a meat chicken tractor in the spring and a quick shelter for the fall chicks with 4 2x4's for the bottom, some scraps to brace that diagonally, and two cattle panels wired together. Cost around $40 or so. Tarps were tied over the whole thing. I am thinking I could use one to store a few bales of hay, straw, and/or shavings, too. Once the meaties are in the freezer. I'd put down pallets with a tarp on top on the ground inside, then fill it up so that nothing touched the top tarps. I bet it would work. I'm going to try it with shavings and straw this winter, as hay is too precious for an experiment.

That's a good point! I'd hate to stock up on a ton of hay only to have the hut blow apart and have to store it all in my living room....

I had to double check. There's 2 Hamiltons in NJ, as well as Hammonton and I can never remember which is which! But, Hammonton is about 1/2 hour drive from here. And, Sweetwater is even farther, but it doesn't look to be too far.

Cool! He's right on the Mullica River. Literally. It some times reaches his front door during floods. It's beautiful down there. We haven't been in a few years but we used to go every summer for a few days. He was the superintendent of schools out on Long Beach Island before retiring. He takes out to his former secretary's house and we have a blast playing in real waves since we only have puny Long Island Sound waves here.

If you ever come down this way again, LMK! We could meet up for lunch or something.
