Good job on the soap. :thumbsup I want to make a batch when this jug of store stuff runs out. I saved the last few empty jugs to hold it. We use liquid, then I can use it as a pretreat on spots too.

I need to use plain soap instead of the Fels-Naptha stuff. I wonder if Lava would work. Has anybody tried it?

I read posts on another sites and they say Ivory is a good soap to reduce any allergy concerns.

Castille type soaps will work too.

I think the fels naptha smells nice. I may use saved coast soap slivers and melt them with the felsnaptha in the next batch cuz i like the smell.

Fragrance oil is a good add too. But not the essential oils. They dont hold a smell and never add to the hot water. just my experiance with EOs.

Also made cornstarch bath powder. Just added some yummy fragrance oil to cornstarch and some grapeseed oil and makeup quality glitter for fun.

So I'm feeling all girly and less sweaty.

Go me.

LOL.

You don't realize how nice our homemade soap really is until you spend time with someone else's "clean" laundry.

When I recently helped my sister clean out my dad's closets (he is in a nursing home) I ended up with several bags of fresh laundered clothes in my truck seat with me on their way to the Salvation Army. The "fresh" laundry soap scent was so strong I had to roll down the windows to breathe! :sick

I have the same problem with one of the liquid fabric softeners. I'm not sure which one it is but I recognize the smell. If I am at the store near someone who has used it I can't breath. :sick

I don't do well with the chemicals and all the scents they put in stuff. I'm using home made cleaners for almost everything else already, but have been bought laundry soap still.
Fels Naptha has napthalene in it. It's used by dry cleaners, but the chemical is nasty. I'd rather play it safe and not use it.

I have never used Fels Naptha to make my laundry soap. I couldn't find it at first and by the time I did I had been making my own soap for so long I never bothered. :idunno

At first I just used basic old Ivory soap and it seemed to work fine. Now days I make a VERY simple lard/tallow based soap recipe called a Homesteaders Soap. The ingredients are just water lye and the fat. Both of these have always worked well for me. ;) I also keep a bar of Zote or my homemade bar around to use for spot treating any stains.

FFresh, that's pretty interesting about the Homesteaders soap. Care to post how you do it on another thread?

I remember reading not to use Irish spring for laundry soap as it will turn buttons yellow. I made only one batch of laundry soap using regular bar soap. I grated the entire bar for a 2 gallon batch, but it didn't clean nearly as well as the batches that I had used Zote. (We get pretty dirty around here sometimes.)

Funny how people react to different scents and smells. I absolutely can't stand the smell of Ivory soap. But I kind of miss the chemical scents of purchased laundry detergent and softeners. Sigh. But I'll keep making my own as long as I'm able to stir a pot!
