well bummer on the fels naptha. It smells really good. But I guess the next batch i will use a different soap.

I love my goats milk soap. I wonder if it would be a good enuf cleaner to wash the clothes???

hmmm. Now Im off to explore soaps....

Two weeks till we go to Jersey and NYC. Im so excited.

We are going to stay with friends two blocks from Radio City music hall. I just about cant stand myself.

Then a trip to friends who live in Jersey just blocks from the coast. We arent going to have to get a hotel room unless we want one.

This is looking like a dream vacation. We are planning on seeing Cirque de Solei and Wicked. Now that the budget wont have to include hotels.

I bought an all day trip on the double decker buses to tour NYC and the harbor cruise and a tour of the Statue of Liberty. Cant wait.

Going to his friends family ice cream shop. An Italian ice type deal. In little Italy.

oh and we expected to ride the train from the airport to NY penn station. Nope, our friends in NYC are picking us up.

Can you tell I'm thrilled. Im gonna be a jabberbox when we get back. i plan on sharing tons of photos.

Oh and wanted to share... one of the things we want to do while we are there, is to check out the bath shops. Im looking for some amazing ways to package our bath bombs, fizzys, melts etc.

I want high end look and to be as current as possible. Also I need great ideas for table settings for the displays.

The goats milk soap would work IF it is not super fatted. For a laundry soap you want the extra fat in the recipe to be held to a minimum. I make my bars for laundry at about 1-2% super fatted and I only super fat that much to make sure that all of the lye is used up in the solution. A fatty (moisturizing) soap will leave your clothes with more of a residue.

The homestead soap is easy:

Homestead soap

106 oz tallow, lard or rendered waste fat (I don't use waste fat - it tends to smell funny)
14 oz lye
41 oz water

Then proceed as with any cold process lye soap recipe. ;)

see this is why I want a goat. making cold process soap is so easy. And the soap is not the gelly stuff that melt and pour stuff is.

what do you use for fat? Could you use just regular lard from the grocer?

I use regular lard for most (or all) of it and a bit of tallow - if I have that on hand. I usually get lard when we buy a pig to be butchered, but I have used lard from the grocery store also. That same little butcher shop will give me a BIG box of suet if I ask for it, but I usually pay the to grind it like hamburger for me. That makes it a lot easier to render for tallow. I have also had friends who have butchered a pig GIVE me lard.

So if you consider the cost of the lard, and tallow and the lye my "laundry soap" bars cost very little indeed!

Cool shower gel idea! Pun intended. So you store it in the freezer?
