I just don't read those threads. And if I need some ss stuff, I come up with a new thread. I love it when a new person gets some stuff going, even if it is stuff that has been discussed, the very act of discussing it again brings up new ideas.

Some people get comfort from discussing their fears, so let 'em.

So thanks, Tallman, if you are reading this thread! for stimulating some new discussions.
:frow Hi freemotion - I'm here. I'm the one that should be thanking all of you. Nothing to add, but much to soak up.

:thumbsup

Awesome, Homesteadmom! For me it has been more of a hobby, and whenever necessity calls for being frugal. With an underlying theme of being "green." That is how I was brought up, and have lived my life.

Now I find myself gathering up all the skills and projects I've accumulated over the years and trying to use them all at once, as a lifestyle. It is a challenge, living in a part of the country where the cost of living is rather high, and bringing in outside money is a constant challenge.

But very satisfying and stress-relieving!

And Hi back at ya, Tallman!

Someone mentioned that life is boring without stress of some kind. Apparently this person hasn't lived a very stressful life for as long as I have. Stress is not entertainment for me, nor is it exciting. Its disruptive and annoying.
Uh, that would be me. ;) I guess how you define stress could be the cause of our differing opinion. I see stress as "challenge." Too many financial, family, work, social or other challenges, and life is not fun. Too few challenges (or stress), and life, for me, would become dull. Not actually boring, since there's always something fascinating in life, but some people work better with just a certain amount of pressure and challenge.

Well Me&thegals- it has expanded a lot of gardens this year.
I guess there is stress that motivates and stress that paralyzes. The first kind is what is useful, the second just makes everything worse and drags down anyone who come in contact with it.

Yep, there are different types of stress. The energy-sucking type, and the motivating and even fun type.

I get SOOO much done when I have a deadline. Like today, I have appts starting at 12:30, so I know I only have a short time to get stuff done. Not really "stress," but a little twinge that motivates me. So I have to stop checking my e-mail and coming here to see what's going on!!!

Thanks for helping me clarify my own thoughts :) I remember in college hearing stress defined rather broadly--good stress, bad stress, no stress.

So, definitely I avoid the energy-sucking, negativity-radiating, drama-all-the-time kinds of stressful people :)

But, nothing like a huge to-do list kind of stress to get me off my behind and working!

Love that gardening! What a great way to relax, think, be calm, work hard AND get a pile of food :celebrate

I agree with that, ME. In nursing, when an emergency arises that requires quick thinking and high drive, I am at my best. It centers me down and all other distractions fall away. I am calm, focused and competent.

In other types of nursing, where there are too many tasks, too many distractions, and too many people with whom to communicate over a 12 hour shift, I am less focused and more easily distracted and can forget important information. For this, I keep a running note and record everything I need to know, immediately....if I didn't I would never remember anything!

I don't mind the former kind of stress and actually enjoy the challenge of it immensely, as you described. It comes in short bursts, it activates the fight or flight response, which can be a bit of a high as the adrenaline courses through the veins...makes your thinking more clear, your movements take less effort, and your response time quicker. I guess its like being on cocaine for a short time...without the let down afterwards! :p

Useful (I can't make myself say good) stress is when there is something to be done, something were you can focus your energy on doing something.
Paralyziing stress is when whatever it is is not within your ability to do something- it fritters the body and mind's resources but never accomplishes anything . Like watching those 9/11 television news shows. Bad things kept repeating (til I turned the TV off) and there was nothing I could see to do about it. Just feel worse and worse.
More and more helpless.
All of us can and most of us are doing things about the financial situation- getting a prepared for eventualities as possible and still have a good life.

We started out with just a garden more for hobby & better tasting food than anything else(I started this over 20 yrs ago), then slowly started adding animals other than 4h & FFA projects & it is just a way of life for us now. Although with the inflation of groceries & fuel we are expanding our garden this yr & planting more fruit trees to help combat that even more & we will be canning more & freezing more this yr. Building a better coop & getting more hens is my goal to have more eggs to sell to cover the cost of my feed so our eggs are free!

It kind of pulls you in, hey? And it is so wonderful to have the chickens pay for themselves through eggs. I have to say a thanks to the gals every night as I leave their barn since they are doing just that for us now :)
