This was my first time to part up a chicken and I think it took longer to do that than to process it :p I didn't do too bad though.
I've not had any trouble with the skin tearing so far.
also - they had a good amount of grass in their crops so I was pleasantly surprised at that.

So the tyson chickens and such aren't grown with steriods? I had always heard they were. hmm.
Maybe not steroids .... but enough medication and antibiotics in their feed to cause me plenty of dread.

If that is not bad enough (or you choose to believe that they are fed only pure wholesome foods) the fact that they live on the same bedding their whole lifetimes, waller constantly in ammonia laden feces, never see the sunshine or breathe a fresh breath of air in their 40 day lives - tends to put me a bit OFF of commercially raised chicken meat. Not to mention the river of blood and guts that they are bathed in at the processing plants.

JOIN US Hillfarm!! Raise your own sunshine worshiping, grass eating genetic freaks. You will wonder why you waited so long!!

I thought it wasn't supposed to be as bad today, but it's very sticky and warm here so :hu At least it's overcast so far. I have to get peppers in the ground today! This weather has my hands so swollen that everything is a bit of a pain. Hopefully I get adjusted to it soon.
OFG - yes those goats are HOT!
I don't think strawberries are ready around here yet. Our closest place is Jacquemin Farms, but with the Memorial golf Tournament going on this week I think I'll wait. Tournament = traffic nightmares in our area.

That's one good looking BBQ. I think I might need to break out some bird today!!

We have not tried our home grown chicken yet. I wanted to get through the reserves first.

hillfarm, my family processed our first birds a couple weeks ago. It went really well. Everyone helped. After the first couple we worked like a well oiled assembly line.

I plan to do it again soon.

Stay cool you Ohioans.(sp)

E and I were talking about getting creepy meats - because I was reading the canning thread and free mentioned canning cat food and I said, "if she can can cat food, we can can dog food!"

Do creepy meats taste different than dual purpose layer cockerels?

We have only eaten homegrown cockerels and I must admit, we didn't like it. I mean, it was okay, but even the breast seemed dark and very small. The birds were young males but still seemed kinda tough.

Is it the way we processed or something? The meat had kind of a strong taste and I adore the flavor of chicken, but still didn't like it. We finally ate it in soup but by then it didn't have much texture left.

None of us want to eat our chicken now and growing meaties just doesn't appeal, but is it the type of chicken?

IMO, they taste much different. The creepy meats tasted like...chicken. Only better. The roosters we've had were almost like dark meat turkey, I guess I would say.
