I have not yet been outside, but I saw the temp. I'm still stumbling around with my coffee. I woke up in the middle of a dream and I feel fuzzy in my head.
I saw there was a tornado in MA and am off to check on our friends in the northeast...

We cooked our Yard Birds as my dh like to call them, last night. Everyone was happy with the flavor. We were very surprised with the breast. It did not cook up with that chalky white meat flavor. Stayed very moist.

I'm ready to grow some more.!!!

SD, I have no idea. Savings is a relative term. If I was buying pastured poultry from the farmer's market, then oh yeah, big time savings. If I'm comparing to the $5 large roasted chicken I can buy at Sam's club, then my birds will be more expensive. I don't buy chicken breasts or parts at the grocery, so I have no idea what they go for.
I think once you factor in chicken stock and feeding the parts to the cats and dog is where you find even more savings. I use alot of chicken stock to cook with.
The chicks were 2 bucks each and I think I have used 5 bags of feed for 9 chickens.. But I was also using that feed for other chicks, and our feed store had a 'buy 3 bags, get $10 off' promotion. Flockraiser here is almost $17. I didn't have to buy feeders or fencing so there was no expense there. I had planned on having them on grass alot earlier, but you know how the weather was here so they were a month old before I got them out on grass. They nibble on the grass quite a bit, but not as much as standard chickens.
So for a bird that weighed 6 pounds dressed at 6 weeks, I am very happy with the cost and effort. I know where it came from and I love that.

Meaties aren't that bad....we sold ours for $10 per bird last year and we are gonna up our prices to $12 per bird. People around here will pay $4/lb for pasture raised chicken. So we come in cheaper than that. After our expenses last year we put the 21 leftover birds that we didn't sell in our freezer for $33. That's $1.57 per bird. Not too bad....I think we're gonna do around 100 this fall when the temps are cooler so we don't have to worry about heat stroke....for the birds OR me :p

I'm bummed cause I probably won't get any strawberries from my plants this year.....I do have blueberries though!
