I love the drakes :D but Harlequins are just so darn pretty male or female. Not that I'm biased or anything....LOL

My 2 goober drakes are inseparable. I thought there might be fighting once TJ hit puberty, but I guess I have enough females to keep them both happy.

Do you lock them up at night? How many ducks do you have or should I say how many ducks fit in there?

:yuckyuck My body says the same thing!

Karen - I keep 6 ducks in there, (shh, don't tell the BYC people!) and they only go in at night. Just like the chickens, when it gets dark they head in. I put new straw in about once a week - about half a flake. If it gets bad I toss some more on top until time for clean out.

Wife - my drakes are best buds too. They don't fight and are never far from each other.

They are yard candy  We started out with them for 4-H, but are keeping them for eggs and breeding. The Welsh Harlequins are supposed to be very good for both purposes. I want to see if I can sell a few ducklings here and there. I suppose we would eat them if we can't sell them. I have never had duck before, so I don't know if we would like it.

NOT Southern, Ca. :)
I bought a duck from the grocery to see if my family would go for it. The kids liked it because it was dark meat. DH ate it but was not to excited. The hard part was the carving, and the greasy texture. The joints were not where I expected them and the darn thing kept slipping around. I think over all it was not bad. I would probably part it up raw next time and bake it a bit differently.

But we are so dry here I don't think ducks would work.

Gina, ducks only need to have enough water to dunk their heads in. When it's super hot I give them a kiddie pool to play in. They love the water, but they can be happy without it. :)

I'm wondering if homegrown duck would taste different than store duck. I have heard that duck was greasy but so far everything that I'm reading says that duck isn't greasy like you hear. I can't speak from experience but it does make you wonder......

No doubt diet has a lot to do with it.
