OFG- I think mine looks just like your Nibbles! Uh...they might be somewhat related. Do you know her sire? If yours came from up north, and mine came from the place that shares sires...it's probable.
Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'll probably feel overwhelmed until they get here.
Lori - are you a little freaked out about it like I am? Having read about so many horrible situations here and on BYH, I am sure I must be crazy. I guess the good thing is that I may well be the most prepared goat owner in history. I'll probably have a medical kit and the knowledge to use on par with a vet As I am experiencing with chickens, ducks and human kids - knowledge is is the best tool, it's working out pretty well so far. But I know I can't control everything.
I want to be responsible and I do not go into anything lightly. I will be prepared to do the tough stuff, the fecals, the blood draws, whatever they throw at me. And luckily, I live near the OSU ag center, so there are tons of livestock vets within minutes. And my brother is a nurse, so I guess he can be of help for non-critical stuff. (yeah, he doesn't know this yet, shhhh)
I know I'm getting some hardy stock too, so that's a plus.
I have really learned alot here. Like - it's fine to do things naturally, and I will, but be prepared to act with appropriate meds because they can go downhill so fast.
Geez, I didn't have this much anxiety about bringing my human babies home from the hospital
I agree...I was less anxious about bringing my babies home.
I do get freaked out when I think about it but I know I'll be fine. The breeder I'm getting mine from is about an hour or so away and she is very good at following up and when we weren't able to take the goats this year she was even going to send us back our deposit and we told her "no, you keep it for all your trouble". She has always said that we could call her if we had any problems or questions and she keeps the females for breeding at her house and has separate pens set up for them.
If you want to take a look at her site it is www.cornerstonefarm.net She has a whole section on goat care that is very informative too. She has nigerians.
I was supposed to get 6 this year, thanks to my hubby's big mouth, but next year I think we will get half that. Hubby has agreed to take an older doe that cannot be bred but I want at least 2 that I can milk.
I don't know when they will come home - it depends on when we are ready. It's going to take a while, maybe 4-6 weeks because we have so much other stuff going on right now. Greg's uncle died in a motorcycle accident so we have a funeral this week and there's other family stuff to travel too.
School starts in 2 weeks too I hope it will free up some time for me. I'm looking forward to quitting the referee job that has been bestowed up me by my older 2 kids. Fight, fight, fight. I need to give them more work to do.
No way that's going to happen Lori. They are only 10 and 11 and I'm betting it would create more work for me than I ever need. I do have floors that need mopped...pretty nasty from canning tomatoes last week.
