jessejames, people who haven't dealt closely with addictions really have no idea - I am fortunate in that my sons didn't fall into anything like that, but I have two close friends who have heroin addicts for sons, one has two - the heartbreak for those who stand by and watch is excruciating. I do admire you for continuing to try to pull yourself together, keep up the good fight, you are worth it!

I agree Jesse!

I am constantly AMAZED how the stuff that I went through as a child has helped me to help others. It is a good thing to just be open and honest about the trials of our lives. You never know who is watching you for guidance.

home at last....
thought i was gonna get tuck in the city for another day at least there..whew!!!
toronto is just about to settle a five week garbage strike. so the city is a bit stinkier than usual.
i did get some awesome garbage scores though
1 rain barrel 60 g
4 8"x36" argon window (3 are jut what i need to finish coop...ya right)
many large plant pots as well as some medium sized ones too
1 futon frame to be turned into garden fencing for new garden
6 heavy duty out door light fixtures with metal casing very nice
the downside being i dropped my blackberry in a puddle and it seems to be kaput not an expense i need right now
i also spent too much money on books and magazines as a always do though i couldnt find any of joel salatins' books in a store in the city which bummed me out i always hate ordering over the internet. at least this way i can order it right from polyface.
oh ya and on my way home i stopped by to look at some chickens that where for sale and i somehow ended up with a pair of bantam brown leghorns (i wish i could take a picture but my only camera is in my phone these days damn)
i also have discovered for sure that one of my mutt chickens is def. a roo. since i have no desire to contribute any more mutt chicken to the world i am seriously thinking about trying to remove his testicles. i have always been in to the idea of surgery so.....why not? from what i have seen it looks to be fairly straight forward as far as that sort of thing can be, but eeing as i plan on trying to make an income from meat birds at some point it make sense to learn now especially on a bird i dont really care that much about (not that i will act in any way differently i do respect its life etc. im just saying...)
i h ave come home to a garden overflowing with veggies. my first real harvest of snow peas (started way late) lots new squash etc starting, tonnes of tomatoes none ripe, and my swiss chard seems to be almost recovered from last weeks chicken attack, basil is flourishing as are my leaf lettuce and romaine, carrots, beats, brussel sprouts etc...
one thing is my broccoli is very happy as in has major leaves growing like mad i just am not seeing an flower production yet from any of them. any help out there is this normal ?.?.....
it was really nice to cook a few meals for friends while in the city with the fruits of my labours so far nothing to fancy just nice garde fresh cooking.
well thats all for now just wanted to check in.
i know i owe yall a post as i said last week i just need to be in the right state of mind and being in the city is not conducive of coherent thought for me always.
once i have had time to acclimatize to my surroundings i will
hope yall had a good weekend i am looking forward to tom. as my day off to mess with my various projects and watch my two new chickens
be well

I have tried the caponizing a few times. It is not really that hard IF you have a caponizing kit with the proper tools. I was amazed at how fast the chicken seem to recover from what is basically an un-anesthetized surgery. I really don't think the chickens feel anything except the first cut through the skin.

I usually don't bother with it however. I just think it is a lot of trouble (and stress on me) than it is worth for the result. I simply separate the roosters, feed them up and make a stew. :drool

We really don't know a whole lot about him, so I don't feel that we should be passing judgement and making him feel unwelcome. We honestly have no idea.

I fail to see true evidence of his 'controlling' addiction. What, bad typing and poor grammar, suggestive dialogue? Even if he was still addicted, what harm is his posting causing you?

Who are we to judge whether or not someone is ready to join SS?

I'm sorry if he doesn't meet up to your standards, but a lot of people in this world don't meet any form of stardards, because people are not made to meet up to each other's ideals and regulations. Makes people different, but we all have a common goal..

I would bet there are a lot of things about people on here we don't know of, and if we did we might view them differently. There are many things about me that could make a lot of people probably hate me. Atleast Jesse is being honest.

None of us have the right to make that assumption about anyone on this board.

Everyone has an addiction of some kind, not all are illegal...Mine happens to be chickens

But, none of us, not you, not me, not any member on this board, has the right to make judgements on who should and shouldn't be members on this board.

That is for Nifty, and Nifty only, to decide if someone can be here or not.

jessejames hasn't broken any rules. Just because he's a recovering addict to something doesn't mean he doesn't have the same rights as the rest of us to learn how to be SS. Maybe he's trying to learn something new to help him get over his addiction (may I suggest 100 chickens, jesse? :gig) or maybe he just needs a group of non-judgemental people to learn from.

And who said we aren't a self help group?? Seems to me that we are all offering advice/help to eachother as an SS group...I'm sure we can all offer advice and help to jesse, too, on his SS journey.

Not sure we can help you with your recovering addiction, Jesse, but advice at being self sufficient, a lot of good stuff on here already! :)
