My maples have already dropped 50% of their leaves, strange as it hasn't been the cold at night. I am not ready for fall yet!! :hit

I am hoping for less snow this year, but I did purchase a 60 inch plow for my kabota to fight the building snow.

I have been doing ok... Do you find periods where something might hit you about recent lost loved ones? Sometimes, when I look at other drivers, ones with mustache and dark glasses I think I see my Dads face. I am sure this might be a normal issue. The cologne he wore was a musk that isn't even sold any more, I used to think of mom when I smelled lavender. She often put on Old Engilsh lotion and smelled of Lavender in the evenings.

Hope your doing good!!!

Jay, I know exactly what you are talking about. For me, its music. My son always had music playing when he was around. His favorite group....Shinedown. I LOVE that group, but now, when I hear thier music..I just bawl! My CD sets on the desk...getting dusty for now.
Glad to hear you are doing "ok" Its rough, I know...but we are strong..and will survive. ( or so they say) For me, I dive into my work, head on. If I try to take a day to stop, I think.....then I get depressed. I know I "need" to think and work through it, however, I am not ready, I am not strong enough yet. So, I stay busy.
Fall is my favorite season. ( being an October baby)
As for winter coming?? I DO follow some of the old folk lore signs.
1) Persimmon seeds...split them..if you see a spoon, lots of snow. If a fork, little snow. So, I grabbed a few seeds from my persimmons...split one..spoon, DANGIT. So I split another, spoon...they HAVE to be lying to me! I split 5 seeds....ALL spoons.
2) I cut into the north side of a tree....the bark was THICK. This is supposed to mean COLD winter. dang again!
3) Squirell nesting. If they build low, easy winter....so I watched the squirells....DANG, they are nesting in the TOP of the trees! STUPID SQUIRELLS! LOL
So, we will be adding a few extra ricks of firewood to the storage.....and I will pull out all the blankets and get them washed and ready. ( I have about 30 GOOD quilts, and wool blankets for windows and doorways.)
Dureing the blizzard of 78 I think it was...in Ohio...my mother used blankets to cover all the windows...and doorways around the living room, where the fireplace was. We was able to keep it toasty warm in the house...barely even noticing the blizzare around us outside, other than no power. So, my blankets will be on the ready.

I do remember the blizzard in 78 but we didn't have enough blankets to do what you do. I do remember having plenty of coal prior to the storm. We often loaded the back porch during summer and fall with wood for the cook stove in the kitchen. It needed small wood than the wood burner in the living room.

WOW!!! If you read that statement, you could tell we were SS in many ways that I am not today. do use a wood stove as a main heat source but also have a boiler to heat the house. The boiler, which isn't correctly placed, does run if the temp gets down to 62 degrees in here.

I placed the wood stove to the far side of the house and have a small fan to blow the heat down the hall. We use the fire place in the living room as a heat source during the evenings and week ends. I have a fire place heater that runs and blows the cool air in the room through a tube, that air warms as it pushed through. It gives us 30% more heat than if we didn't use it.

I hope your wrong but I still split extra pallet of wood every season in case it gets real cold like last winter. If this winter is like last winter, I am headed south for a few weeks!!

Jay, we use the wood stove for our main heat. We put it n the basement, where the family room and office are....as well as the laundry room. These are places we spend most of our time. being in the basement, the heat naturally rises, and warms the upstairs fairly well. A good heavy blanket on the bed, and we are happy. Of course, the furnace is set on 65, just in case. ;)
This week hubby took off of work to get a few of the bigger tasks finished. His brother is staying with us for the week, to help. Today, day one....the new doors are on the shop. :D It took them all day but that was tearing out the old, and building new doors, while running from wasps!!! BIL doesn't run as fast as hubby and I, so he was stung. YIKES! He is a trooper tho, and kept on working.:p
Tomorrow they are going to finish the doors...insulation and inside coverings.....then fix the gutters on the big coop. Wednesday the plan is to get the leftover wood split....for kindling. I have 2 large plastic crates to hold the kindling. I will be canning tomato sauce.
The last few days I have had a slight fever, and body aches. YUK. Flu season already?? I am trying to work through it all...mending fences...canning, and harvesting the gardens.
Im off to bed...hoping I can rest well, and feel better in the morning.

Darn! We had a hard winter last year. So. Much. Snow. I don't mind the cold at all, but when there is a foot or more of the white stuff for months at a time, it gets old fast. I feel bad for the animals mostly.
Last year's heavy snow is the reason we decided to build the goat barn really close to the house. They can come onto the covered porch to stretch their legs if need be, and taking care of them will be so much easier than if we had to trudge across an acre.
Our squirrels nested kinda in the middle of the trees this year. Haven't checked the bark and I don't know if we have persimmons around :hu

I was 3 during the blizzard but I don't remember it. Mom has photos of us playing where the snow was up to the roof of the house. I have no idea how we got outside. I too remember using the blankets to seal up the room with the fireplace. I have to wonder about carbon monoxide though... I'll have to ask Dad about it.

As for the carbon monoxide....I remember mom left one window slightly cracked closest to the woodstove. Maybe half an inch. Guess back in those days tho, most people didnt really worry about stuff like that. Crazy how we all survived. :hu

I hear that the "official" prediction is for a colder and snowier winter for northern states this year.

Ah, that's where I hear the persimmon story. I was over on AL's journal thread. Even down in FL. her horse is growing a thick winter coat. She says that horse is never wrong. Burrr!!! I can feel it coming.
