So, Sunday morning, hubby and I made the trip to Indianapolis ACC, to get a load of animals that were taken on a confiscation case. Total is 13 chickens, 4 ducks, and a goat. A MALE, intact, black pygmy goat! UGH!
Here are a few pics....One hen didn't make it tho. I found her dead in the coop Monday Morning. :(
This is Fred. He is a little thin...not too bad, and needing to be castrated.

A pair of Pekin Ducks. They actually look pretty good.

Here are the 2 other ducks....I think the male is a Rouen?? Not sure.

Here are a few of the hens, several pullets. :) All look clean , no mites! YEAH!!

Some of the older hens, Golden comets...I think molting.

So, this is what we have been doing....keeping everyone watered, and as cool as possible.
Oh, and Suzie is home..... I am getting 3 quarts a day from her. Not bad considering she is a first time freshner!!

They look pretty good for rescues.

I was wondering if Suzie was home yet. 3 quarts is good! Especially in this heat. Keep Fred far, far away from her :D (Of course, I know you know that ;) )

Ohhhh, yes....Fred is no way near her. I have 4 pastures....Suzie is in the SW pasture, Fred is in the NE pasture. They can see each other...but no touchie, touchie! LOL
They stand in the corners, and "talk" to each other sometimes. Even in their corners, there is about a 10 ft section between them. Mean isn't it!?? LOL I need to get him "fixed" and find him a home..ASAP!

Thanks OFG. I have to admit tho....taking in these little pullets was a blessing in disguise. I was needing new layers. :p The ducks...well...who can say no to a few more ducks?? ( I am now up to 19 AND a goose) Now, the little goat....he will have to find another home, eventually. I have to get him castrated, and make sure he is healthy before finding his new forever home. I just hope he does HIS part while he is here, I have LOTS of weeds that needed taken care of, and well...gas is high right now...so I guess he is a blessing as well. :D As long as I can find Fred a home before winter. :p
I forgot to add....a little tidbit about our return trip home.....It was HOT....I mean, after chasing chickens and ducks in a pen( where the chickens had NO water! ACC my butt!!!!) to get them in the cages, in 90+ degree heat...the drive home was long and hot. We had to stop 2x's to fix the tarp over the poultry. Then...it started to rain, and I had 2 big trash bags of bird seed, and pond/fish food that was donated, and we had to stop in the rain to get that in the front of the truck. We were a little worn out, and not really talking much, when we saw a train on the tracks next to the road...it was moving very slow..and as we made it to the front of the train, the conductor was hanging out the window, with a broom, "paddling" along! :gig We both had to laugh...it helped to lighten the mood.
Off to finish supper...pepper steaks with Morel mushrooms...cheesy potatoes, creamed corn, and a yellow cake with fudge icing! YUM! Im looking forward to the cake later, with an ice cold glass of fresh goats milk!! :drool

ha! thats pretty good! you have to love a guy with a sense of humor..i wonder how the conductor came up with that one!

we are always kinda laughing (lovingly) at the rescues around here - we're pretty sure we wouldnt meet their criteria (them: will you give them a forever home? us: until we eat them! ha!) but we'd love to get some of those free hens and ducks! whee!

ahem.. hee hee hee.. anyway

wait - there's cake? yum...........!

Bless you for taking in all those animals at once! That is a lot to settle in at one time. The little goat looks like he could use some TLC. Thank goodness they have you! :love

How did you get started with farm animal rescue? How did the people who confiscated the animals know to call you?

I contacted a local rescue, and told them I was interested in fostering Farm animals..when and IF they get any. Oh boy, do they get em! There was a BEAUTIFUL gelding up there, I wanted him so bad. He was gentle...sweet, and had a GREAT personality. I just don't have the room for him, or a way to move him.
OFG. Our rescue knows...some animals are just meant for the freezer. Like last summer, a butcher hog came through the rescue. I explained to them, he could NOT be a pet...no one would want a pig of his size. He was already over 150 pounds! So, they told me to " do what has to be done" He was YUMMY!!! LOL
Now, don't get me wrong, we dont eat ALL the rescues...just the tasty ones. :hide
ETA...yes, there is cake....well, there is SOME left. LOL YUMMY!!!!!

It is nice they let you use your own discretion. It is good to get something back out of it when you volunteer, we have always found that we got back more than we gave, funny how that works.
